How City Legislation Becomes Law

1. IT ALL STARTS WITH AN IDEA! (Usually from a constituent, neighborhood, or staff member)* 2. THEN IT GOES TO THE CITYS LEGAL DEPARTMENT TO BE DRAFTED (and vetted
for legality)

3. ONCE BACK FROM THE CITY LEGAL DEPARTMENT, THE ORDINANCE IS FILED BY THE COUNCIL MEMBER SPONSOR (and co-sponsors if more than one council member
has worked on it)

4. THE SPONSOR (at any time during the process prior to passage) HAS THE OPTION OF SENDING THE ORDINANCE THROUGH A LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE (PLANNING/COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE, FINANCE, PUBLIC WORKS, and PUBLIC SAFETY) 5. THE SPONSOR (at any time during the process prior to passage) HAS THE OPTION OF REACHING OUT TO THE PUBLIC FURTHER FOR FEEDBACK ON THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE (examples: emailing the ordinance to all neighborhood councils for
distribution, visiting neighborhood councils or Community Assembly, meeting with stakeholders, interviews with media)*

6. AFTER FILING, THE ORDINANCE BY CITY CHARTER SHALL HAVE TWO PUBLIC READINGS BY TITLE (with at least 3 days between the introduction and final passage)*

*Opportunity for public feedback and public participation
