The Spanish Inquisition

Quest started by the Catholic church to remove nonCatholics (Jews and Muslims) from Spain to create a religiously pure country
Concerned that nonCatholics had too much power and money, and would rise up and take back Spain for themselves

Inquisition taken over by King Ferdinand and Queen

The inquisition consisted of a system of courts people would be put on trial and told to convert to Catholicism or leave Spain People were often tortured in order for them to confess themselves as heretics

S.I. contd

Why is the Spanish Inquisition Important?

Ended up expelling many Jews and Muslims from Spain
This would leave lasting wounds for thousands of years

Many Jews and Muslims very well-educated and were skilled in business and medicine when these people were forced out, or forced into hiding Spain was left without anyone to run the economy
Shows the fear/jealousy Ferdinand and Isabella had of other people being in power (they wanted to be in control of everything!)
