Melanie Petrillo SSE 4313 Science 1. Cows eat grass. Grass grows because of the photosynthesis cycle.

After reading the nonfiction text, Cowboys by M.W. Sandler, students will use technology (computers) to research what Cowboys and farmers used cattle for. Students will record their findings in a graphic organizer of the students choice (flow chart or KWL) SS.4.A.4.2: Describe pioneer life in Florida. Creative Arts 1. After reading Cowboys: Voices in the Western Wind: Poems by David Harrison, (and completing Language Arts Activity #2) students will create their own I am poem about Cowboys, being sure to use examples of figurative language. 2. After reading Cowboy Slim by Julia Dannenberg, students will draw, color, and/or paint themselves as a Cowboy, trying to make him/her as individual as possible while still maintaining the elements of how Cowboys dress.

Physical Education 1. Students will participate in The Round Up, a physical education activity that uses teams and balloons that teaches the concept of branding cattle to elementary age students. Lesson idea found from http://www.kerncattlew omen.org/wpcontent/uploads/2011/ 04/The-Round-UpGame.pdf 2. Cowboys used the lasso technique to help round up cattle. Students will replicate the handeye coordination used in lassoing by tossing differently sized hoolahoops around pegs in the ground.

Math 1. Students will be divided into cooperative groups and participate in math centers, completing word problems as a group such as If a cowboy trots on his horse in a straight line at 10 miles per hour, how long will it take him to ride 10, 560 feet? 2. Another example of a word problem would be: A bale of hay contains 85 pounds of hay. The cowboys horse ate 2/5 of the bale. How many pounds of hay did he eat?

Language Arts 1. After reading Cowboy Ghost by Robert Peck as a class, students will write a fictional, narrative essay about life as a Cowboy. 2. After reading Cowboys: Voices in the Western Wind: Poems by David Harrison, students will be asked to identify examples of figurative language within poems which will be recorded on a class anchor chart. (see Creative Arts #1).
