Cell reselection After a cell has been successfully selected by the MS, it will start making measurements on its

neighbouring cells BCCH carriers. If a cell with stronger signal level is found, it will be decided if a cell reselection should be executed. Frequency band The available frequencies can be grouped into different bands that do not cause interference to each other. The 800, 900MHz and the 1800, 1900 MHz frequencies naturally form different bands. There are 124 channels in P-GSM 800, 124 channels in P-GSM 900, 174 channels in E-GSM 900, 374 channels in GSM 1800, and 299 channels in 1900 MHz, available for traffic. Inter system cell reselection Cell reselection between networks using different radio access, e.g. GSM and UMTS. Limited service state The MS will try to camp on an acceptable cell irrespective of its PLMN identity, so that emergency calls can be made, if necessary. Location updating To keep the network updated on the location of the MS, the system is informed by the MS on a regular basis. Multi-RAT MS User equipment that can obtain service from GSM and one or more different RATs such as UMTS. Paging This is the process whereby a network attempts to contact a particular MS. This is achieved by broadcasting a paging message containing the identity of that particular MS. Registration This is the process in which an MS becomes attached to the network. Roaming When a MS moves around a network in idle mode, it is referred to as roaming. 218/1553-HSC 103 12/7 Uen B1 2005-08-19 41 User Description, Idle Mode Behaviour System Informatio n The System Information messages sent by the BTS, contain data about the network that the MS need in order to communicate with the network in an appropriate manner. Voice Group Call A voice group call in VGCS is a multi-party call where only one subscriber is allowed to talk at a time, while the rest is only listening. CS channels are used.
