Portfolio Proposal

Linda Randall Azusa Pacific-San Diego Campus EDUC 526 Capstone Experience in Educational Technology in Teaching and Learning Professor: Dr. Joanne Gilbreath The Water Planet February 6, 2014

In grade 5, earth science explains the significance of water on earth. This project begins with observing how earth is mostly covered in water. It shows the ratio of salt water to fresh water. It illustrates how the limited fresh water is distributed throughout earth. It explores the life cycle of a drop of water. Finally, this project covers different types of severe weather and how meteorologists use different types of maps to predict weather.

Goal(s) of the Portfolio

This portfolio project will provide students with an overall understanding that water is limited and essential for both the earth and every living creature. It will provide awareness and the need for water conservation. What are the causes and effects of severe weather and how weather is analyzed.

Student Learning Outcomes Students will discover how earth is mostly covered by water. Students will understand the ratio of saltwater to freshwater on earth. Students will be able to identify where fresh water sources are found and why it is important to take care of our usable water. Students will be able to recognize that water changes from one state to another through the water cycle.

2 Students will be able to list the causes and effects of severe weather Students will be able identify different types of maps and how meteorologists use them to predict weather

Unit Outline

Water, Water Everywhere Day 1- Students will learn the difference between fresh and salt water on Earth by watching a classroom experiment. They will independently comment and respond to why they think water is an important. All of the Worlds Water Day 2- Students will view the distribution of freshwater on Earth via internet and create a bar graph and narrative to show understanding. The Returning Raindrop Day 3- Students will be able to diagram the water cycle and apply note-taking skills while listening to a video. Help! Our Water: Read All About It! Day 4, 5, 6- Students will learn how to research a crisis/concern about water. Students will create a newsletter in Microsoft Word and present it to their peers. Extreme Weather, Map it Out Day 7- Students will research severe weather and diagram on a map using webspiration where different types of severe weather occur in the United States. Extreme Weather, Chart it Out Day 8- Students analyze the causes and effects of severe weather and create a graphic organizer in webspiration Newscast Day 9, 10, 11, 12- Students watch a severe weather newscast and research one of their own. Students will create their own newscast using either PowerPoint, ipads, or imovie and will present it to their peers.

3 Weather Maps Day 13, 14- Students will create a weather map in either webspiration, paint or gimp 2 and narrate it for their peers. Weather Plots Day 15- Students practice weather decoding via internet and take a snapshot using jing to narrate its conditions.
