Arpita Saha September 30, 2012 CATHETER LAB TOUR # 2 Date of Tour: September 25, 2012 In this tour

of the Catheter Lab, we were introduced to various biomedical equipment used in the hospitals for cardiac care. We were shown many different technologies like imaging using electrical signals, cardiac stents to reduce vasoconstriction, packemakers, defibrillators and many more. We were given a brief insight on how these tools operate. And, we got to hear first- hand how medical professionals use them on a daily basis for diagnostic and corrective procedures for cardiac related issues for patients. I learned some of the processes involved how various electrical signals of the heart are detected, amplified and recorded using a catheter. We were also shown some real catheters which were very fascinating. We were also shown some of the data that can be acquired from the catheter like 3d images of different parts of the heart. Next, I learned about the procedure of stents, and how they are used to increase the size of blood vessels when needed. The demonstration using a real life cardiac stent on how this procedure is done, made the concept more clear. I also learned some interesting facts that a large percentage of people who require these procedures are there because of leading unhealthy lifestyles, which is completely preventable.
