What is a Part of Speech?


The term part of speech refers to a
category to which a word is assigned in accordance with its syntactic functions. In simpler terms- it is the box in which particular words belong.

What is a Noun?
A noun can be defined as a PERSON, PLACE, THING OR IDEA. Look at this word cloud and place these words in a category. They are either a PERSON, PLACE, THING, OR IDEA.

What is a Pronoun
A pronoun is a word that is used to replace a noun or another pronoun. You use pronouns like "he," "which," "none," and "you" to make your sentences less repetitive.

His/Hers/Its/Yours/Ours/Theirs Relative- connects 2 pronouns within one statement Who/Whose/That/Which/Whoever/Which


ever/Whatever/Whom/What

Pronoun examples: Personal Pronouns- used in place of a common/proper noun


I/ Me/He/She/It/They/Him/Her/You /We/They/Them

Reflexive- used when the object of the


sentence is the same as its subject. Note: Each personal pronoun has its own
reflexive pronoun. /Themselves

What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that describes an action, state, or occurrence Can someone in class share some examples?

What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or
other adverb.

TIP: Adverbs add to the verb (add+verb=adverb ) TIP: Adverbs usually end in LY

relationship There are 150 prepositions so we
would never remember them all.

Conjunctions are words that are used
to connect clauses or sentences. Examples: And Or But Nor So For Yet

What is a Interjection?
An interjection is a word added to a sentence to convey emotion.
The highlighted words are interjections.

TIP: Interjections usually end with an exclamation point.
