ALDERFERS ERG MODEL: Alderfer has slightly modified maslows theory.

He gave out questionnaires to over 1oo employees at several levels in a bank . This led him to propose that there are three categories of needs.namely Existence Needs, Relatedness Needs, and Growth Needs. The first three lettersof these needs are used to call it ERG Theory. Existence Needs: These include all needs related to physiological and safety needs . Relatedness Needs:These include all social and affiliation needs and the need for respect and positive regard from others. Growth Needs: these needs include the need to develop and realise ones potential.Maslowsself actualisation needs and some parts of esteem needs.

Thus according to ERG Theory different types of needs exist simultaneously . If fulfilment of a higher order need is blocked i.e if something is preventing the higher order need from being fulfilled an individuals attention will regress back towards fulfilment of lower order needs in the hierarchy.e.g if relatedness are relatively satisfied , but growth need fulfillment is blocked , an individuals attention will return tofulfillment of relatedness needs.Alderfers ERG Theory assumes that growth needs become more important rather than less important as they become fulfilled.Thusalderfer came out with a frustration- Regression Hypothesis. Growth Needs: these needs include the need to develop and realise ones potential.Maslowsself actualisation needs and some parts of esteem needs.
