Preface to first edition

During 1935 we contributed a series of articles on this subject in The Architects' Journal. In view of the considerable interest which these aroused, it has been thought desirable to reproduce them in book form. The material has been amplified, and many new sections added. We are indebted to Mr G. Nelson Haden and to Mr R. E. W. Butt for many helpful suggestions, also to Mr F. G. Russell for reading through the text. Our thanks are also due to Mr J. R.
