The lesson that I selected for my showcase lesson is multiplying fractions.

My lesson will include a preassessment, during assessment, and post-assessment. All of these assessments were created to equally evaluate what the students learned. The objective for this lesson is: 5th grade students will apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a fraction. The activities in this lesson will all be based on multiplying fractions. I will base the entire lesson on real world multiplication problems, such as making cookies (and doubling and/or tripling recipes). The purpose of my pre-assessment is to learn what the students already know about multiplying fractions. This will help me to write a lesson plan that is created uniquely for my students. Multiplying fractions has not yet been taught to the fifth graders. But they have been told in the past that multiplying fractions is the easiest because all you do is multiply straight across. This prior knowledge should affect my pre-assessment data directly. The purpose of the during assessment is to be sure that the students are all participating and staying on task during the class. Each student will be given a fraction to wear around their neck. I will have sticks with each of the students names written on them. I will draw two random names and those two students are supposed to come up and multiply themselves. My post-assessment will be identical to the pre-assessment. It will have four multiplying fractions problems. It will also have two real world word problems. Previous standards have indicated that the students need to be fluent in pulling information out of word problems and they are supposed to successfully be able to figure out the answers of word problems. Students are also supposed to use units on their word problems. Before giving the students the pre-assessment I will be sure to tell the students that they have not been taught the information. I will stress that it is okay if they do not know the answers. However, I will not tell them that it is not for a grade. Due to the classroom atmosphere and past experiences of this, the students will not take it seriously if it does not count. The pre and post assessments will be given a score based on how many of the answers that they got correct. There will be six questions total. However, the two word problems will count as two points each. This is because the students must have the correct answer and the correct units listed. It has been stressed in this class how important it is to list units when there is a word problem. The students will receive a score between zero and eight based on how many answers they got correct and the units on the word problems. For the during assessment, the students will be assessed based on their group work. I will observe the students and their participation. I will also be watching for correct answers as the students are multiplying themselves. I will use a sticky note and write down the names of students that do not participate. This class knows that if their name is on a sticky note, they will lose all or part of their recess (their teachers choice, not mine.) I will also write down the names of students that are consistently missing the answers. This is so that I can pull these students into a small group to help them better understand the material.

During the assessments, there are students that require accommodations. There are two students that require ESOL accommodations. I will say the directions out loud, as well have them written on the assessment paper. Assessment Plan Table Lesson Objective 5th grade students will apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a fraction Assessments Pre-assessment During Assessment Postassessment Format of Formative Assessments Pre: Six question quiz that will ask the students to multiply fractions. Four of the questions are just fractions that they will need to multiply, and two of the questions are word problems. Students will be expected to put units on the answers of the word problems. During: I will observe students participation and correct answers. I will keep a sticky note of the students that are not participating. I will also write students names down who are consistently getting answers wrong. Post: Six question quiz (identical to the preassessment quiz) that will ask students to multiply fractions. Four of the questions are just fractions that they will need to multiply and two of the questions are word problems. Students will be expected to put units on the answers of the word problems. Accommodations There are two students that require ESOL accommodations. I will say the directions out loud, as well have them written on the assessment paper.
