During the torture scene in the beginning of Book Three, Obrien makes the assertion that reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else (257).

Evidence

Halfway through his torture, Winston capitulates and believes that anything [can] be true. The so-called laws of nature [are] nonsense. The law of gravity [is] nonsense (288).

Evidence

Although he survives horrific torture, Winston meditates on his struggle to attain the truth: But it was alright, everything was alright, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother (308).
