Introduction
Stop the silence, take action, and help people to fight back with STDs What are we doing? Have you ever thought about what our prior generations left us? Are we better off now, than we were twenty, thirty, forty, even fifty years ago? Have you ever thought about what we are leaving our next generation? Ten, twenty years from now, will they better off than we are today? Well what are we doing to insure our future, the HUMAN RACES future? Your children, my childrenwell? More than 15 million new Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) cases are reported each year in the USA (Gov.org network). STDs are the most widely spread diseases that are passed from personto-person during unprotected sexual intercourse. Preventing STDs is one of the most important campaigns that everyone should become involved with, we are talking about our future. In November 2011, KTVT Channel 11 reported that the number of young persons in Dallas infected with HIV and AIDS is increasing. These diagnoses included children to young adults ages thirteen to twenty-four. This age group makes up 25% of all new diagnoses in Dallas County. Dallas County has the highest total rate of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in the state of Texas, a position which it has maintained for several years (blogs.dallasoberver.com, 2011). The spread of STDs is directly affected by social, economic, and behavior factors. We, Church & Dwight Co. Inc., would like to give a helping hand to prevent STDs. In order to help the community, we want to educate students in the Richardson Independent School District in Dallas County. Our program will be implemented in Richardson high schools and junior high school by educating the students to understand the risk and prevention of STDs. Twelve high schools and junior highs in Richardson ISD are chosen for our implementation. The projects agenda will last for three months from February 4 to April 27 of 2013. During these three months, we will apply our program funding to a nonprofit organization, AIDS Arms, in order to work effectively. AIDS Arms and Church & Dwight will reach out to young people to give them the best tools to protect themselves from STDs. AIDS Arms is the largest nonprofit HIV/AIDS service organization in North Texas. As the result, their education professionals and our sponsorship are geared to respond to this mission in cost effective and persuasive ways. Programs mission Even though STDs are extremely widespread nowadays, most people all over the world are hardly aware of the risk and consequences of this dangerous type of infection (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, November 22, 2010). Our program mission is to reduce and to prevent the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. The project is designed to prevent STDs and HIV among high school and junior high students within the Richardson area. We will mainly focus on sexual health education, communications, and counseling activities. We would like to deepen STD/HIV knowledge, develop positive attitudes about this issue, and provide the techniques to improve correct condom use.
Page 2

Know Your Status The program would be extremely beneficial for society since our program may help to lower STD and HIV incidence and deaths. It is important for everyone to realize that some types of sexually transmitted diseases can be treated, but some cannot such as HIV. That is the reason why we will mainly focus on sexual education and prevention rather than treatment. In order to carry out the program mission, our activities are providing education, offering consultation and technical assistance, testing, identifying and sharing best practices for STDs and HIV prevention. Programs objectives To have 90% high school students in Richardson area acknowledgeable about what STDs and HIV are, the cause and the treatment. To provide STD testing to at least 3000 high school and junior students over the threemonth period. To ensure 70% of the students who have a positive result for STD tests have an appropriate medical treatment. To increase at least 70% of students attending our program using condoms with their partners the next sexual encounter. To ensure at least 75% of high school students have a straight talk with the STD consultants in our program about their sex health. The measurement of our programs success would be based on attendance, the number of testing applicants and the number of students who redeem Trojan coupons. Why our program is important? According to the 2009 Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in November 2010, young women ages 15 to 19 continue to have the highest rate of gonorrhea (568.8 cases per 100,000) and chlamydia (3,269.5 cases per 100,000) compared to any other age or sex group. Additionally, syphilis rates for both young men and women aged 15 to 19 continue to increase, with syphilis rates from 20052009 increasing as much as 167 percent among black males aged 15 to 19 years. Here are some of the questions and concerns that led us to develop the program: If the majority of people in the country are receiving enough information about STDs, why is the sexually transmitted disease rate still fairly high? What is actually being discussed in most sexually transmitted disease prevention programs? Are those people who are actually infected or are suspected to be infected really open to discussing the issue? Are young people really knowledgeable about the signs, symptoms and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases? Do people think that an STD is something shameful so they try to hide it from their family and their health care providers until it gets worse?

Page 3

Know Your Status It is true that increased knowledge does not automatically interpret into practice. However, knowledge will help people overcome the anxiety about STDs and encourage them to take action. Meaningful education as well as practical testing about sexual health issues like STDs can encourage people to engage in healthier behaviors. This is why our STD program is so important. We will offer people a place where they can get useful health information; obtain tips on how to talk to their friends, partners, and health care providers about getting tested for STDs; and become more involved educating their communities about STDs.

Background
What are STDs? The staff at the Mayo Clinic defines Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) as infections generally acquired by sexual contact. The organisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases may pass from person to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). Organisms pass from partner to partner with every unprotected sexually encounter. Not all organisms are harmful but the ones that are can cause several types of diseases. The most commonly know Sexually Transmitted Diseases include syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV. Other STDs include hepatitis, genital herpes, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), and trichomoniasis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The most deadly of these STDs is HIV. A common misconception about HIV is that it is the first STD an individual contacts. This is often not the case. In several cases an individual contracts an STD, such as syphilis, herpes, or chancroid. Then genital ulcers develop from these STDs, which results in breaks in the genital tract lining or skin. These breaks/openings in the skin create a portal of entry for HIV (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). There is substantial biological evidence demonstrating that the presence of other STDs increases the likelihood of both transmitting and acquiring HIV. STDs also appear to increase the risk of an HIV-infected person transmitting the virus to his or her sex partners. Studies have shown that HIV-infected individuals who are also infected with other STDs are particularly likely to shed HIV in their genital secretions. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010).

Page 4

Know Your Status What is the link between STDs and HIV infection? Individuals who are infected with STDs are at least two to five times more likely than uninfected individuals to acquire HIV infection if they are exposed to the virus through sexual contact. In addition, if an HIV-infected individual is also infected with another STD, that person is more likely to transmit HIV through sexual contact than other HIV-infected persons (Wasserheit, 1992). (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). Texas STD Facts Texas reported 77,070 AIDS cases to CDC, cumulatively, from the beginning of the epidemic through December 2008(STD Testing Dallas, 2012). Texas was ranked as the 4th highest among the 50 states in cumulative reported AIDS cases (STD Testing Dallas, 2012). Texas was ranked as the 10th among 50 states, with 5.9 cases of primary and secondary syphilis per 100,000 persons. The number of congenital syphilis cases increased from 68 in 1999 to 127 in 2008 (STD Testing Dallas, 2012). Ranked as the 17th among 50 states in chlamydia infections (422 per 100,000 persons), Texas is ranked as the 15th among 50 states in gonorrheal infections (134.7 per 100,000 persons) (STD Testing Dallas, 2012). Reported rates of chlamydia among women (659.5 cases per 100,000) were 3.6 times greater than those among men (182.9 cases per 100,000) (STD Testing Dallas, 2012). Dallas STD Statistics The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases is an issue for everyone in the greater Dallas community. Dallas STD facts illustrate the fact that all types of sexual activity can spread STDs. Syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV transmissions are passed through bodily fluids. Other STDs like herpes move from person to person through physical contact (STD Testing Dallas, 2012). Condoms may reduce the transmission of STDs, but they are not foolproof. Many STD cases exhibit few, if any signs and symptoms (STD Testing Dallas, 2012). The only reliable method Dallas area residents have to assess their risk is through STD testing (STD Testing Dallas, 2012).

Church & Dwight Co. is also a company which sees hope, strength and belief in our employees (Our Values & Vision, n.d.). At Church & Dwight Co., we support a non-profit organization called The Church & Dwight Employee Giving Fund, Inc. (EGF). This organization is funded by the employees themselves. They have given support to numerous events and non-profit organization. These include: Donation of $50,000 to local food banks to fight hunger (Koment, 2011) Donation of $100,000 to the Crisis Ministry (Rosenau, 2012) College scholarships to students (Rasmussen, 2009) Donation of $50,000 to the Rescue Mission of Trenton (Duffy, 2012) Donation of $75,000 to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, 2011)

At the end of the fourth quarter, the EGF group starts making decision on which organization and social is in most need of their funds. For 2013, they have decided to focus the groups efforts on the education of STDs in the young adult community. Sexually transmitted diseases can be transmitted in primarily two ways. One of which is when infected urethral or vaginal secretions contact mucosal surfaces (Male Latex Condoms and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, 2011). The second primary way is through contact with infected skin or mucosal surfaces" (Male Latex Condoms and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, 2011). To prevent STDs, there are several strategies. These include abstinence, vaccinations, mutual monogamy, condoms and several others. One of the major brand name products of Church & Dwight Co. is Trojan. Trojan is Americas #1 trusted condom for more than 90 years (About Trojan Condoms, n.d.). Because Trojan is one of the major brand name products of Church & Dwight Co., EGF saw the potential benefits of reaching out to the youth and educating about them about STDs through this program. EFG has decided to partner with AIDS Arms, Inc. AIDS Arms, Inc. specializes in HIV/AIDS. They are an organization that targets individuals who are at risk of getting the disease and also those who have the disease (Who We Are, 2011). To maximize the benefits of educating our youth, AIDS Arms, Inc. will be educating, providing and delivering the materials regarding STDs. They will also be the organization performing the tests.

Proposal & Plan

Implementation We will work with AIDS Arms while they are in contact Richardsons ISD. After all the procedural protocols are in place AIDS Arm will send knowledgeable STD Specialist out to educate students about the importance of STD prevention. These specialists will talk to the students at these high and junior high schools about STDs and educate them on prevention. After discussing STDs and its prevention, a consular will give the students after their test results. Depending on their results, each student will be consulted differently, using of the one the following two approaches: Group 1, student who are not infected with a STD: These students in this category will have the following covered in their consultation after receiving their test results: Encourage students to practice abstinence, otherwise encourage the use of condoms in all sexual encounters Offer documentation about other health risks (including early pregnancy when needed) Encourage a healthy lifestyle with these students by developing more involvement in school activities such as sports, community service Encourage to have vaccines of hepatitis B shots

Group 2, student who are infected with a STD: These students in this category will have the following covered in their consultation after receiving their test results: Encourage students to practice abstinence; otherwise encourage the use of condoms in all sexual encounters Inform any partner before any sexual encounter Recommend to see doctors for treatment Encourage students to have STDs tests every six months (MDweb.com) Encourage STDs infected students not to hide but instead visit doctors and get treatments. Reduce numbers of sexual partners Use video or large group presentations to provide information about STDs in order to reduce disease transmission Encourage changing sexual behaviors that put person at risk for infection

Radio Stations Our company will advertise with five different radio stations located throughout the Richardson. We will notify high school and junior high students of the exact date, time and locations where they can participate in free STD tests. We have selected a mixture of radio stations which apply to several demographics, in order to diversify and reach a numerous amount of people. The radio stations we have contracted with are:

Conclusion
The epidemic rise in STDs is both a social and economic problem. It is a deadly disease that has affected a lot of people around the world. Many people are not aware of STDs, its symptoms, how it is transmitted, and how can it be prevented. Some people feel uncomfortable to learn or educate their children about this serious matter. The worst is when someone is affected but feels ashamed to get treatment. This is exactly the reason why we have created a team, a team that will educate parents and kids about STD, provide ways to prevent it, and treat the infected ones. Because of our limited time and funds, our team will focus only on the Richardson Independent School District. We hope to touch many lives by our program and make everyone in this community aware of their status. What is your status?
