edu April 9, 2014 Proposal Revisions Updated Proposal: February 12, 2014 Approved by Reviewer: February 20, 2014 Comments by reviewer: Your revised proposal addresses the concerns identified in the initial proposal and your proposal is approved. ***Initial comments***Brett, this is a useful topic but it is difficult to determine if it will meet the requirement of a reasonable expenditure of effort (150 hours minimum). If you develop scripts and storyboards and create high quality videos for the all the components you identified in your proposal, it is likely you will meet the requirement. If you rely on content produced by others and that is available on the internet, this project probably will not meet the level of effort requirements. Assuming the project does meet these requirements, there are several issues that need additional attention. One issue involves your plans for the use of your work to educate students entering the field. Will viewing of the project be limited to VT students or will it be available to a wider range of viewers? Will it be hosted on a VT server or uploaded to YouTube or a comparable service? Another issue relates to the evaluation of your project. Although it is good that you will have the training staff involved in the evaluation, it is important that you also involve learners in the evaluation process. As you think about what both groups will evaluate, you should consider what they can contribute to the evaluation process. For example, the staff probably can judge the credibility and accuracy of your sources of information as well as the correctness of your statements dealing with injury diagnoses and treatment/rehabilitation recommendations while students can provide their reactions about their ability to understand the project content and the ease with which they are able to navigate through the project. Surveys may be an appropriate means to gather this information but it is important that you carefully design the surveys to elicit the type of information you need to evaluate the quality, content, and usefulness of your product. Please consider these issues and then submit an updated proposal for me to review.

Project Description

The purpose of this project is to develop an educational program for athletic training students in the Virginia Tech Sports Medicine department. This program will make clear to the students the uses of rehab specific to a sprain of the anterior talofibular ligament in the ankle, or commonly known as an everyday ankle sprain. To complete this project I will create a series of instructional videos explaining an ankle sprain and why the use of rehabilitation exercises and modalities will provide the best results for the treatment of this injury. The exercises will be demonstrated in videos and the information will be provided on slides that I will create from a word processor. The videos will be uploaded to a YouTube channel and displayed on a website that I will create. This will make my project easily accessible to a wider range of viewers, as well as, ensure a smooth navigation experience for my project. With my project displayed via a website everything will be in one place and I can make it presentable as well. I will be using a web developer program such as Weebly to create my website. My hope is that after viewing these instructional videos the learner will have a greater understanding of this injury and how to treat it properly. This is an injury that all athletic trainers will have to know how to treat appropriately, because it is the most common injury in sports.

Specific Objectives The objective of this video is to teach learners how to properly treat/rehabilitate an athlete with a sprained ankle and more specifically in the sports medicine setting. It is educational as well as instructional in terms of use for students. The student will gain

a better understanding of why these techniques are the best options as well how to properly use them. This project will demonstrate to students how proper treatment of a sprained ankle is performed. Materials and Methods For this project I will need a video recorder, computer, and a subject willing to portray an athlete that has sustained a sprained ankle. The patient will perform all the exercises as an athlete receiving the proper treatment. We will also require all of the supplies necessary for the treatment, therabands, a slant board, and towel. Before beginning the recording of this project I will survey my target audience on their familiarity with these methods. This will help to make sure that this material is not above or below their knowledge base. These results will help me properly script the video clips. All content including scripts, storyboards, and high quality videos will be developed by me with no help from outside sources. Also, I will develop slides via word documents that will have rehabilitation protocols displayed on them. These protocols will give the students a hard copy to print off to use as a template. I will provide lists of proper exercises and functional movements to progress to when the patient has progressed through the rehabilitation phase. These sources will be made available to the students on my project website. I will generate a quiz for the students or anyone viewing the website to take at the end of the lesson on the material that was presented. With these additions the project will meet requirements for reasonable expenditure of effort.

Justification for Project The main justification for this project is to educate students who are soon to be entering the field of athletic training so they will learn the correct method for rehabilitation of a sprained ankle, because this will be the injury that they will see most often throughout their career. Although, it will created for athletic training students it will be made readily available to anyone that would like to learn this lesson. Rehab for a sprained ankle is knowledge that will last the student a lifetime and provide the students with the best methods available. If a student does not rehab this injury correctly they could prolong the athletes/patients recovery. Criteria for Evaluation To evaluate this program I will ask the Virginia Tech Sports Medicine departments athletic training staff to view the video. The staff will be able critique my project and provide reference to the accuracy of my project and the correctness of my statements dealing with injury diagnoses and treatment/rehabilitation recommendations. I will develop a survey for them to fill out with comment sections for input on how to make it better if possible. I will take the answers into consideration and make adjustments as needed to aid in the efficiency of the program. The students participating in the lesson will also participate in evaluating the project by way of a survey. They will provide vital feedback concerning the ease of navigating the website and the effectiveness of the lesson.

Write-up of Results My evaluation tool used to evaluate my project is fairly straight forward. I believe the evaluation tool that I created gives me sufficient feedback when addressing my project. I had my peers and random users complete the survey after viewing my project. The results all proved to be great. Every reviewer gave great feedback and said that the project helped them. The age groups were different as well, proving that it is useful for all ages. I have also included the survey in my project so that when the user has completed their use of my site, they can take the survey if they wish. This will provide me with even more feedback. I have found this tool to be very useful.

Reflection Before creating this project I did not realize the amount of work it would take. I did not appreciate the magnitude of planning and preparation put into a single lesson plan for a class until now. I have completed my project and as I reflect back, I am proud of the work that I have produced. I have developed many valuable skills throughout my ITMA experience and they are skills that will last a lifetime. Digital audio and video are skill that I have learned and used multiple times since originally taking the classes. I have learned to appreciate the lesson planning process and distance learning in general. It has been a worth-while experience for me to develop skills throughout the entirety of the ITMA program and then in this class be able to incorporate all of them to project. The process has been a challenging one, but also fulfilling. I have learned not to limit my expectations and lesson planning. Learning is no just lecture after lecture of boring and dull material. Students need to have excitement and assortment in their learning and it is our job as educators to make this a reality. By incorporating video and audio tools into learning experiences, we are creating better learning experiences and capabilities.
