Topic: Space Exploration Developed by: Melissa MacDonald Grade level: Four (4)

Theme/Strand: The Nature of Exploration

Universal Design for Learning Representation 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information - Information about space (Why do people go to space?) will be written on a PowerPoint and displayed on SMART board. Will also be read orally. Instructions for each station activity will be typed on a piece of paper and will be at each station. 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols Reading the book (A is for Astronaut) will help clarify vocabulary related to space exploration. 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge Teacher will read book and show students PowerPoint with information about space exploration, which will provide students with proper background knowledge. Action and Expression 5.1 Use multiple media for communication Students will be watching numerous videos, watching a music video with lyrics, participating in a Read Aloud, and using hands on manipulatives at the working station. Providing many opportunities for mixed media communication. Engagement

Outcomes GCO: N/A SCO: 4.2.1 - Examine the stories of various explorers of land, ocean, space, and ideas. 4.2.2 Analyze factors that motivate exploration. SWBAT (in student friendly terms): Students will learn how astronauts sleep, eat, exercise, work, and listen/play music in space. Assessment (formative/summative, self/peer) What prior data is informing your instruction? Students would have had brief introduction about Space exploration. Students will do placemat activity as form of assessment FOR learning and as an APK. What do you know about space exploration? (Question on place mat). What assessment strategies will measure the learning from the outcomes? Bell Work: Students will sit a table in front of a flag from Russia, Canada, The United States, or China or a dog or a monkey and will be instructed to look at the front white board for instructions. On board Read your flag and introduce yourself to your group will be written (On the back of each flag there will be interesting facts about each astronaut or animal). APK (Placemat)/Assessment FOR learning: Students will be required to answer the question What do you know about space exploration? Assessment OF learning: At end of lesson, teacher will lead discussion with what did you learn about space exploration? From discussing this question, teacher will be able to assess whether students can give reasons as to why we send people, or animals, into space. (Students will hand this in as a form of exit ticket on the bottom of their handout). Assessment OF learning: Students will be given hand outs for each station that lists: things I liked/interesting facts, and questions I have from completing these sheets, students will be self-assessing. At the end of the class, students will hand them in. Timeline / Elaboration Before (APK)

Required Materials, Tools and Technology Flags with names of astronauts from China, United States, Canada, and Russia (Place one at each seat). Book: A is for Astronaut: Exploring Space from A to Z Traci N. Todd and Sara Gillingham. Space food (Freeze dried fruit, Mars bars, and Smarties) (For food station) Hockey gloves, a wrench, nuts and bolts (For work station activity) 3 laptops (One for music station and one for hygiene/exercise station and one for food/sleep). Hygiene in space video: http://www.asccsa.gc.ca/eng/astronauts/liv ing-hygiene.asp Music in Space Video: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ueh-qFGHELA Food and Sleep Videos: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=AZx0RIV0wss http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=UyFYgeE32f0 Typed instructions for each station (See attached) One double sided handout for each student to be filled out at each station (See attached) Online timer http://www.onlinestopwatch.com/rockettimer/full-screen/ Special Concerns Getting stations set up while students occupy tables. Internet may not work properly or at all.

7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity Students will be looking at astronauts from all over the world, as well as Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield who, through videos, attempts to show students how astronauts live and survive in space. 8.3 Foster collaboration and community Students will work together in small-groups to discuss and share information about a given astronaut (Bell Work) and they will share and discuss with their group at each station.

Focus Question Who goes to space to explore? Why do they go? How do they live while they are there? Bell Work: Students will sit a table in front of a flag from Russia, Canada, The United States, or China or a dog or a monkey and will be instructed to look at the front white board for instructions. On board Read your flag and introduce yourself to your group will be written (On the back of each flag there will be interesting facts about each astronaut or animal). APK (Placemat)/Assessment FOR learning: Students will be required to answer the question What do you know about space exploration? Students will be instructed that the attention-getter for today will be a raised hand. Students will know to switch stations when the rocket timer goes off. During 25m Teacher will read book A is for Astronaut: Exploring Space from A to Z Traci N. Todd and Sara Gillingham. Teacher will do PowerPoint introduction that addresses who goes to space to explore, why they go, and how they live while they are there. Teacher will distribute handouts while students are sitting at their tables. Teacher will go over the handout and explain what stations they will be visiting. Students will be instructed to start stations (Food/Sleep Music Hygiene/Exercise Work) and will be continuously reminded to fill out their handouts at each station. Each group will start at a different station. At each station students will have 5 minutes and will be notified by the rocket timer to switch to the next station (clock-wise). Food/Sleep Station: 1. Students will sit down at station. 2. Students will read instructions listed at table. 3. Students will watch the two videos provided. 4. During and/or after watching the videos, students will fill in the appropriate section of their provided handouts. 5. Students will be instructed to try the space food samples available at the table. Hygiene/Exercise Station: 1. Students will sit down at station 2. Students will read instructions listed at the table. 3. Students will read the article provided and watch the videos that are on the provided link.

Differentiation Students will be moving around which will help kinesthetic and ADHD student(s). Students are able to draw instead of write for place mat and handout. Students are able to talk instead of write if they prefer. In-Class Support Students will be put in groups to better help each other grasp difficult ideas. Teacher will work with students to solve difficult ideas. Teacher will circulate to aide students with any problems that arise. Instructions will be available at each station to help with clarity and so the teacher does not need to explain at each station every time students switch stations. Cross-curricular Connections Literacy Read Aloud GCO 2 contribute to smallgroup and whole-group discussion, showing an awareness of when to speak and when to listen. Reflection Hope to get stations and videos properly set up and running. Hope students enjoy and are engaged in activities, while learning useful information. Hope students understand instructions.

4.

During and/or after watching the videos and reading the article, students will be invited to try the crab walk as it is an exercise that helps builds muscle strength in astronauts before going to space. Students will also fill in appropriate section of their provided handouts. Work Station: 1. Students will stand at station. 2. Students will read the instructions listed at the table. 3. Students will put on hockey gloves and will attempt to use a wrench to screw a nut onto a bolt. 4. Students will also fill in appropriate section of their provided handouts. Music Station: 1. Students will sit at table. 2. Students will read the instructions listed at the table. 3. Students will watch the music video and read the lyrics. 4. Students will also fill in appropriate section of their provided handouts. Once time is up and/or all groups have completed each station, students will be instructed to return to their tables. Opportunity for individual/small group instruction Students will be working in small groups throughout the class (During bell work and placemat) From completing their handouts, students will be working individually, but also ask a friend for extra details. After Once students have completed stations and handouts, they will return to their seats and class will have popcorn discussion about some of the interesting facts or questions they want to share. On handouts, students will be required to fill in exit ticket section, with the question What did you learn about space exploration?
