Learner-Centered

Did I include differentiated instruction? In each class, there will be multiple intelligences and not all learners learn in the same manner or pace. In each class, there will be varying levels of student abilities that includes novice and expert learners. In each class, there will be different backgrounds and cultural values that will need to be identified and taken into account. Have I identified students prior knowledge and experiences? Prior knowledge provides connections for learner to construct new knowledge. Prior knowledge enables assimilation or accommodation of new knowledge to occur.

Knowledge-Centered
What am I trying to teach my students? Subject and content matter. Retention of information, understanding of concepts, and use of new knowledge in other situations (real life or other contexts/subjects). Learning goals. Mastery of the information. Factual knowledge and conceptual frameworks in understanding.

Assessment-Centered
What type of assessment am I providing for my students? Formative assessment should be continuous and occur often. Summative evaluation should occur after students have had a chance to reflect and revise upon their learning. Both formative and summative assessments measure current level of student proficiency.

Community-Centered
Why do I use social learning for individual learning to occur? Provides students with different perspectives. Provides students with confirmation of ideas. Allows the articulation of knowledge construction to occur. Helps scaffold student learning through peer feedback, support, and knowledge.

Did I take into account student interests? Student engagement and motivation increases if there is student choice (ie. topic, presentation platform, area of interest, etc). Student participation increases if there is student choice and engaging activities.

Do I use peer and self-assessment? Self-assessment allows students to reflect on their learning and improve their metacognition. Peer-assessment can help students learn material better through social learning.

What am I doing to promote social learning? Collaboration Discussions and discourse Cooperative learning Communities of Practice Kagan strategies Group projects or activities

Have I discovered students misconceptions? Students misconceptions may make revision or new conceptual construction of knowledge resistant to change. Can use such things as predictobserve-explain strategies to observe any misconceptions, as well as concept/mind maps.

Do I use technology to promote community learning? What kinds? Wikis Online discussion forums Student post questions to a central site for others to answer (ie. class Moodle). Students join Communities of Practice for their own interests.
