Grade Level: Kindergarten Topic: ABC Sandwich game Summary: Small groups of 4-6 children will make a complete

sandwich by manipulating their upper case letters, lower case letters, word association (advanced), and zoo phonics animal friends. Children will also recognize numbers and be familiarized with the numbers 1-26 sets of five. The children are toward the end of learning their alphabet, so this game is to be used as a review more than instructional purpose. Objectives (Standards): English K.1 Students know about letters, words, and sounds. K.1.6 Recognize and name all capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
K.1.19 Learn and apply knowledge of alphabetical order Math K.1 Students understand the relationship between numbers and quantities up to 10, and that a set of objects has the same number in all situations regardless of the position or arrangement of the objects

Materials ABC Sandwich game, bucket for drawing game pieces Procedures I will have a small group of four to six students at a time playing this game. Paper pieces of bread numbered 1-26 are laid out in sets of five across the table. I will first explain how we can count in sets of five, and that no matter how we arrange the sets, we still have the same amount. A child pulls a hamburger with an upper case letter on it from the bucket, and identifies it. The child then corresponds the letter to what number order it is in the alphabet by counting aloud the numbered pieces of bread (via the alphabet) in order until they arrive at their letter. They then place their hamburger down on the bread. After all hamburgers are laid down, we move to cheese, which have lower case letters on them. The children will now draw a piece of cheese out of the bucket. One at a time, they will lay the lower case letter to the matching upper case letter. They will also say the name of the letter, and the sound it makes. I might ask them if this letter is a vowel. The children will pull the top of their sandwich from the

bucket. Each piece of bread will have a zoo phonics animal friend on it. They will identify it, and place it on the sandwich with its corresponding letter. Accommodations Advanced children will be adding a pickle with a word on it to their sandwich. These child ren will read the word on their pickle, and place it on the sandwich with the corresponding beginning letter of their word. Assessment Informal assessment will be used to see how well the children know their alphabet, and how quickly they recognize both upper and lower case letters.
