Topic: Plant Life Cycle

Grade/Class/Subject:

3/ Wall / Science

Date:

4/7/14

Unit/Theme: Plants

Standards: MA: Gr 3-5 Biology: Plant Structures and Functions

2. Identify the structures in plants (leaves, roots, flowers, stem, bark, wood) that
are responsible for food production, support, water transport, reproduction
growth, and protection
- 3. Recognize that plants and animals go through predictable life cycles that
include birth, growth, development, reproduction, and death.

Content Objectives: Students will be

Language Objectives: Students will

able to articulate verbally, in writing,

and in drawing that plants have a set
life cycle with predictable parts.

be able to identify the parts of a plant

life cycle and draw and write about 1 Identify, draw, describe
part of the life cycle.

Lesson Sequence:

1) Discuss the cover of the book with the small group of students. Prompt the students to make predictions
about what the book will be about. Connect student responses to their background knowledge and what
they have learned already.
2) Guide students in a picture walk of the text, continuing to make predictions from the text pictures.
3) Teacher reads the story to the small group, using an expressive voice and gestures. Stop frequently to check
the groups understanding.
4) Students take turns reading aloud. Teacher makes sure each student is following along and understands
what is going on in the text.
5) When all students are done, discuss their reading with them, emphasizing the plant life cycle.
6) Introduce their writing and drawing activity. Each student receive a portion of the plant life cycle which
they will draw and describe in their own words.
7) Model how students should complete the assignment by drawing one part of a picture of the plant life cycle
and writing a sentence to match it.
8) Have students do an example with the teacher, having the students explain what needs to be drawn and
written for one image and one sentence.

The Tiny Seed WIDA Level 1 Lesson

Fully English Proficient
Language-Based Expectations:

ELL Level - 1
Language-Based Expectations:

Students will be able to create their own

story of a plants life cycle using drawings
and descriptions. Students will then share
their stories with the class.

Standards-Based Content or Topic (from the curriculum):

Seeds are created through the process of pollination: when pollen from one
flower lands on the stigma of another, it grows a pollen tube, finds [an] egg cell,
and together they make a seed. (Cole 22)
Plants have a set life cycle with distinct parts. These parts are seed creation, seed,
young plant/sprout, adult plant, flowers, and seed production.
Seeds who dont receive sun, water, and minerals will not grow into plants.
Scaffolding and Support:

Scaffolding and Support:

Using
- blank computer paper
- group example of the work they need
to do independently
- read it through once, taking turns

Using
- worksheet with a space for drawing and
writing one step of the plant life cycle
- teacher reads, then group reads
- teacher example, then group example,

reading

then independent work

For each part of a plants life cycle, draw and

write (in your own words) what happens to
the plant during that stage.
