Graduate Induction Program Recommendation Form Winona State University

Applicant Shelby Wagner is applying to be a Resident in the Winona State University/Rochester Public Schools Graduate Induction Program. This program is designed to provide clinical support to first-year K-6 teachers (Graduate Residents) licensed to teach Elementary Education or Special Education K-12. Fully licensed WSU Residents assume full responsibility for a K-6 classroom or special education setting while pursuing a M.S. in Education. The Resident gains one year of teaching experience in the school system, receives a stipend from Winona State University, and is awarded a tuition waiver for 32 graduate credits towards a Masters degree. Because of the rigorous nature of the program, those offered residencies must be academically able to successfully complete graduate work, while teaching full-time.

Shelby was a student in four Education courses I taught as a part of her undergraduate program at WSU-Rochester during the 2012-2013 academic year. In all of my experiences, Shelbys work ethic and professional demeanor consistently reflected qualities that befit an exemplary beginning teacher. As I reflect back on the 2012-2013 academic year, there are 3 aspects of Shelbys teaching that immediately come to mind: 1. Shelby has a very calm, caring, and energetic disposition that almost instantly earns the respect of the students she works with. 2. Shelby demonstrated a strong commitment to collegiality. Members of her cohort and the mentor teachers she worked with quickly valued this attribute. Shelby is a team player through and through. This will benefit the students she works with, as I have no doubt she will work with parents, specialists, para-professionals and other professional educators to ensure that each childs learning needs are met. 3. Shelby demonstrated a tireless commitment to self-reflection and continuous growth. This was regularly observed by her instructors, her mentor teachers, and even her peers.
