Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson Name of Book: Lon Po Po by Ed Young Level: DRA 2.6 1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? The area of focus was on cause and effect. The teacher gave the children the effect of an outcome and they had to raise their hand and tell her the cause. The activity the teacher used in the lesson was a fish bone skeleton concept map. This is a graphic organizer that looks like a fish bone. The teacher also helped create a fish bone skeleton concept map over the cause and effect of why she was late this morning. The students really enjoyed this. 2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn? I feel the part that went well with the instruction was how well the students were engaged. At first, she had about half of the classes attention. However, when she jumped over to the fish bone concept map involving why she was late to class, the whole class became involved. After she went over the rest of the lesson, the students were to write about the cause and effect on a worksheet. She

erased their fish bone from the board and then handed out the worksheet. Almost all the students were eager to start and finished this assignment with confidence. I would say they learned the cause and effect of this story. 3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading.) I realized how relating any lesson you are teaching children to something they can relate to can really help them grasp the concept. Doing this also gets the whole class involved in the discussion. They start laughing and reminiscing, and ready to know what the teacher is going to say next. I feel that this is important in any lesson!

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation. There was a growth moment in the class when the class finally figured out the cause to why the teacher was late. While discussing the cause from the book Lon Po Po the students seemed to be struggling with the correct answer. Then when she stopped what she was doing and switched over to the cause and effect as to why she was late, they were able to come up with the cause on their own. Being able to do this caused the cause and effect to click. After that, they were able to come up with the cause in the story. Relating this to her personal life was something the majority of the students could relate to or relate their parents to.
