Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson Name of Book: Comprehension Skills pack Level: DRA 2.5 1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? The area of focus today was making inferences. We started off the lesson by talking about the Tortoise and the Hare. Following our group discussion we created a graphic organizer on the board. Details from the text, what I already know = inference/conclusion. We filled in what we spoke about regarding the Tortoise and the Hair. Then I wrote an example sentence on the board and filled in more of the graphic organizer regarding the one sentence. Following this we read a story called Treasures from Nature. We stopped after each paragraph and made inferences. After ending that story, the students read Anasazi as a whole group and filled in the graphic organizer after each paragraph on the board. We didnt have enough time to complete the write and share at the end of the lesson. 2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?

This lesson was started on the wrong track due to the substitute. I wasnt included in her sub plans so I wasnt even sure if I would be able to teach. The children were all in a bad mood because it was last day for the book fair and the sub wouldnt let them go. So when I started this lesson the children didnt really seem to be interested in anything I had to say. However, a couple minutes into the lesson and I had all their attention. I felt that by the end of the lesson every student truly understood what an inference was. This made me extremely happy. 3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading.) I have subbed before so this isnt really new information. However, it is amazing how different children act when the teacher is in the room, compared to a substitute teacher. One student in particular has always been on really good behavior. Always raising his hand and participating in classroom discussion. However, this time he was defiant and extremely upset for not being able to go to the book fair. He was slamming his pencil down and making the loudest sighs repeatedly. A different teacher came and had a talk with him. When he came back to my mini lesson he was back to his old self.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation. As far as an area of achievement during reading I felt the students understood comprehension better after they understood inferences. At the end, I asked the students what in inferences was. The same boy that had the discipline problem raised his answer and told me an inference was a guess. Then a little girl in the group corrected him and said that is a prediction. In inference is details out of the book plus what we already know!
