Article: The Oceans and the Weather Author: J. Webster and Judith A.

Curry Main Points: The ocean and the atmosphere work together like a planetary thermostat Warm air rises and then as it moves it cools down to vapor creating clouds and rain In 4-6 days the clouds move from west to east two massive storms happen each winter in the western pacific ocean and the western Atlantic ocean the winds can go up to 100 kilometers per hour hurricanes only form in places where the ocean surface temperature exceeds 81 degrees wind moves inward into the eye of the hurricane then moves upward creating the high storms air flowing in the ocean surface toward a low pressure center might be expected to dampen the storm An El nio can cause landslides in certain areas when the ocean provides a more stable source of moisture it can be more harmful than a hurricane monsoon means bringing different types of weather year round During the summer the northern hemisphere heats up Monsoon doesnt only mean a period of rain In springtime the northern hemisphere loses its wind strength and increases in temperature La nia is the opposite of an el nio In October 1997the surface temperature of the eastern pacific had risen by almost six degrees

Summary: The weather in different countries are controlled by the activity of the ocean. As the air goes towards an eye of a hurricane it gets stronger and stronger, especially in tropical areas. Places where it is higher than 81 degrees are more likely to get hurricanes. When an el nio occurs the warm water and clouds are moved to places like California and causes floods and landslides. A la nia is the opposite of el nio it moves colder water to places that usually have warm water.

My Thoughts: I think that something like el nio has its good things by bringing warmer water here and more rain were it is needed but in places like south America they dont need those floods because it can really hurt them. Also a drought in places like Australia can be worse. So what? The ocean activity affects the weather and climate of countries What If? If something like an el nio happens how would the weather be, will there be any hurricanes in California What does this remind me of? Day after tomorrow Says Who? J. Webster and Judith A. Curry
