Melanoma is a deadly skin cancer caused by exposure to UV rays; all ethnicities can get melanoma. 60% of WSUs student body comes from Greene and Montgomery counties. These counties are among the top 15 out of 88 in Ohio for melanoma incidence. Melanoma can be disfiguring and can leave large indentations and scars on many parts of the body, such as the face or legs, if caught in the late stages.

Dont Let Melanoma Win

Protect Your Skin

Choose the SPF that works best for your activity: SPF 15 blocks 93% of harmful UVB, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 blocks 98%. For more sun exposure or more intense activities, like intramurals, wear a higher SPF sunscreen. If youre walking around campus, you can mix sunscreen with your lotion. When you study outside in the quad, use a hat and sunglasses to protect your skin. If youre in the sun for extended periods of time, no matter the SPF, reapply periodically (every hour is best).
