The Mystery of the Waters

8he waters are mentioned at the be2innin2 of creation. 8he 0pirit of :od moved upon the face of the waters !:en. 1%2". arFness was upon the face of the deep. 'ne translation calls it Gthe roarin2 deepG. 8he earth was without form !chaotic". 8he 5ebrew phrase for Gwithout formG is tohu wabohu. Tohu wabohu, that unformed chaos, to which are added the darFness, choshek, and the water$ deep, tehom,Hall are understood in ;ob, #salm and several of the #rophets to have been dominated b$ entities that are at enmit$ with :od. 8he$ are controlled b$ the GpowersG resistin2 :odDs power. :od represents order, li2ht, life, love, and creation. 8he chaotic deep represents disorder, darFness, destruction, and death. 8he bathic sea, the wild ocean waters, is that which is contained b$ :od in the &reation. !R.
