Competency 10

Engage, assess, intervene, and evaluate with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

Practice Behavior 10.1

Substantively and effectively prepare for action with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. EXAMPLE: Include my students and parents when getting ready to take action/implement a course of action to advocate for them.

Practice Behavior 10.2

Use empathy and other interpersonal skills

EXAMPLE: When I am speaking with my students and/or their parents, I will relate to them and establish a repertoire so they feel comfortable and know that I am sincere.

Practice Behavior 10.3

Develop a mutually agreed on focus work. EXAMPLE: I will not just tell a student or parent what the plan for helping them is, it will be agreed upon by all of us involved.

Practice Behavior 10.4

Collect, organize, and interpret client data EXAMPLE: Keep a well organized file of documents and recordings related to my students and review it so I am familiar and understand the content.

Practice Behavior 10.5

Assess client strengths and limitations EXAMPLE: Work with my students and parents to know what they are very good at and what needs to be worked on so that I can help build the strengths in order to make the weaknesses stronger.

Practice Behavior 10.6

Develop mutually agreed-on intervention goals and objectives EXAMPLE: My students, parents, and I will all agree on the goals to be met so that they are understood and we are on the same page for success.

Practice Behavior 10.7

Select appropriate intervention strategies. EXAMPLE: I will be sure the intervention strategies for my students and parents are what is most beneficial for them, not something that is irrelevant to our goals and success.

Initiate actions to achieve organizational goals. EXAMPLE: I will make sure my actions and what I do as a social worker will contribute to the goals and success of my school.

Practice Behavior 10.9

Implement prevention interventions that enhance client capabilities. EXAMPLE: When working with my students and parents, the intervention strategies will be ones that will also make the client stronger, not just one dimensional interventions.

Practice Behavior 10.10

Help clients resolve problems. EXAMPLE: When my students are having a problem, i.e. being bullied, I will help them to fix the problem for the long term, not short.

Practice Behavior 10.11

Practice Behavior 10.12

Practice Behavior 10.13

Social workers critically analyze, monitor, and evaluate interventions. EXAMPLE: I will make sure my interventions are the right ones and continuously monitor it to know if it the intervention is showing signs of improvement and in the end, I will evaluate it to see the level of progression and success.
