Subject or Topic: Introduction to matter

STANDARD: 3.2.3.A1: Differentiate between properties of objects such as size, shape, and weight and properties of materials that make up the objects such as color, texture, and hardness. Differentiate between the three states of matter, classifying a substance as a solid, liquid, or gas. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): The third grade students will explain the makeup of matter. The third grade students will compare and contrast the properties of matter. II. Instructional Materials 1 Banana 1 Balloon 1Water bottle 1 Ball 1 Soda Bottle 1 Binder 1 Pencil Chart paper Worksheet Index Cards with either a solid, liquor or gas object Chalk Board Tape Pinch cards III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) Prerequisite Skills: The 5 senses

Key Vocabulary: Matter-Anything that takes up space Property-Something you can observe by using your senses Volume-The amount of space matter takes up Solid-Matter with volume and shape that stay the same Liquid-Matter with a volume that stays the same but a shape that changes Gas-Matter with no definite shape or volume Big Idea: What is matter? IV. Implementation A. Introduction Read the book called Whats the Matter Pause during parts of it and ask questions about it and ask Tell students that matter is anything that takes up space Have the students guess what the unit is going to be on When they say matter tell them yes that is correct, we are going to talk about matter B. Development Set up objects on three different tables for centers o One table will be all solid objects o One table will be all liquid objects o One table will be all gas objects Demonstrate what an objects properties are by using a binder o A property is something you can observe by using your senses Remind me what are your senses See, hear, touch, smell, taste o This binder feels hard o The binder is green o The binder doesnt have a smell o The binder has a square shape As you go around to each center, I want you to describe and write down some characteristics of each object based on their size, shape, color etc. o Dont switch centers until I tell you to do so After everyone has been to each station we will share our results o What did you notice about the objects on table 1? o What did you notice about the objects on table 2? o What did you notice about the objects on table 3? Show the powerpoint o Discuss what is matter o Discuss the properties of solids, liquids, and gases Separate the board into three columns solids, liquids and gases Give each student an index card with either a solid object, liquid or a gas object written on it

o Students will come up and place their index card under the correct column o Read off each object in the first column and see if the students agree or disagree with the items listed. Have them explain why. Repeat this with the remaining two columns C. Closure Review what matter is Give each students a pinch card with the words solid, liquid and gas o Say a definition and the students will put their finger on the word they think it is, and then hold it up o Do this will all three definitions Give students an example of either a solid, liquid or a gas and they need to show which one it is by using their pinch card Today we talked about what the properties of matter are and tomorrow we are going to talk about how the properties of matter are measured a. Accommodations/Differentiation Students with visual impairments and or hearing impairments can sit in the front of the room

b. Assessment/Evaluation Plan i. Formative 1. The students will hand in their description sheet 2. Pinch cards ii. Summative 1. None for this lesson D. Reflective Response a. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (after lesson is taught) Remediation Plan b. Personal Reflection i. How well did this lesson work with the class? ii.
