Hawaiian Cultural Based Lesson

Lesson Topic: Preservation of the Hawaiian Culture Objective: What do I want my students to know and be able to do? List clear, broad statements of important ideas, concepts, skills and dispositions to be taught and learned in a content area. Content Standard(s): Using the DOE content standards website, select one or two standards your students will meet by the end of your lesson Grade Level: 4 Students will be able to understand how different Hawaii is from the past to the present by learning how to preserve the Hawaiian culture through several elements such as music, dance and tradition and natural resources and will be able to create and practice their own way of preservation. Students must include elements provided in the rubric. Social Studies Standard 1: Historical Understanding: Change, Continuity and CausalityUnderstanding change and or continuity and cause and/or effect in history.

Benchmark SS.4.7.3 4th Grade 4.6.1 - Explain how language, traditional lore, music, dance, artifacts, traditional practices, beliefs, values, and behaviors are elements of culture and contribute to the preservation of culture. The student will identify the differences of Hawaiis culture from Ancient Hawaii to today in Hawaii. Student will relate their own family culture to themselves and the culture of the Hawaiian people. The student will compose their own plan to preserve what is left of the Hawaiian culture

Student Product: What will be the end product or result of this lesson?

Students will reasons why the Hawaiian Culture needs to be preserved through a reflection based on their knowledge. Performance Task: What will students do in order to produce the result/end product? What will the student be involved in to facilitate the achievement of the expectations? What learning opportunities will be provided to allow the student practice? The student will read, research and use prior knowledge to distinguish the similarities and differences of the Hawaiian culture to themselves and Hawaii today. The student will formulate their own plan to take part in preserving the Hawaiian culture as a keki of Hawaii by recreating old Hawaiian values through modern practice. The Kalo and the Preservation of Culture article will be read by students in small groups. Followed by a video titled The Native Hawaiian Cultural Trademark which highlights the importance of history of Hawaii, how it has changed and what we can be done in preservation. This will be used to give students an idea about their Preservation Plan. This resource was very helpful because it allowed students learn more about the past of Hawaii through literature and art. The video clips were used in teaching past and present, how over time Hawaii has changed. It allowed explanation of what was different and how these traditions can be similar to the

Assessment: How will the teacher and student know that the end of the lesson meets the standard(s)? What is the activity or method that will be used to demonstrate evidence that the student has met the standard(s)?

A Students will share in small groups how they will implement their plan through a short presentation, which will include a poster of what their course of action is. And how it will be implemented. A refection with their ideas about how their own family culture relates to the Hawaiian culture and a self-evaluation will be the last step in the lesson.
