KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teacher Candidate: Cooperating Teacher: Group Size: 24

Valerie Morrison Morgan Barr Allotted Time

Date: Coop. Initials 20 mins Grade Level Kindergarten

Subject or Topic:

Sink & Float

Section

STANDARD: 3.2.K.A1- Identify and classify objects by observable properties of matter. Compare different kinds of materials and discuss their uses.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): The Kindergarten students will make predictions on how different objects can raise the water level line

II. Instructional Materials Clear cup Water Small items that sink o Pennies o Grapes o Rock Small items that float o Fruit loops o Feathers o Water bottle lid Chart

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) A. Prerequisite skills How everything has a different weight, shape, size and density. They will have to come to conclusions and make predictions. B. Key vocabulary Density- amount of mass per unit volume

Weight how heavy or light something is C. Big idea How the water level will move with different objects.

IV. Implementation A. Introduction Questions o Do you think if an object floats it will affect the water level? o Do you think if an object sinks it will affect the water level? Easy Science for Kids video o Explains why objects float and sink and shows example of water level.

B. Development 1. Students will be working in pairs and will be given a clear cup of water for each pair. 2. Each student will also be given a worksheet that has a chart for all their observations. 3. They will make predictions on their sheets and mark the original water level on the side of their cup. 4. They will then look at the objects provided and mark on the side of the cup where the water level will be when they drop each object into the cup of water. 5. They will be provided with six different color markers to keep track which line corresponds to what object. 6. Each pair will take their tray of objects and one by one see if and how much the level rises. 7. They will record their answers on the chart and see how accurate their predictions were.

C. Closure Once everyone has finished their worksheet we will bring the whole class together and have a discussion on everyones findings. We will discuss if everyone had around the same findings and why things happened like they did.

D. Accommodations/Differentiation Write down the process step by step and make clear instructions.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan

1. Formative- We will have an exit slip they will have to turn in at the end of the day, asking what items made the water level rise and what made it go lower or stay the same. There is no summative for this lesson

V. Reflective Response A. Personal Reflection 1. How could this lesson be improved? 2. Did my students have enough time to finish the experiment? 3. Did I pick good objects for this experiment? VI. Resources
