Unit Title: Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions A-APR Content Area: Algebra 1

Name: Nicole Conneally Grade Level: 9th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials. [Linear and quadratic] 1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of Addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. Big Ideas: The big idea is for students to know how polynomials work and how to operate them. Students will learn the difference between polynomial functions and other functions. Students will recognize when they are working with a polynomial functions. Students will learn the rules of polynomial functions. Unit Goals and Objectives: a. Identify polynomial and rational functions. b. Perform algebraic operations with polynomial and rational functions. c. Know how to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. d. Know how to factor polynomials. Unit Summary: This unit is not an easy unit. There is a lot of material that is going to be covered on polynomials and rational functions. Students will learn through lectures, group activities, websites, presentations and worksheets. Students will learn how to operate polynomial functions and find the zeroes by factoring. Students will understand the concepts about polynomials and different terms dealing with polynomials.

Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level: How do you Add polynomials?

Formative: Discussion- First discuss and teach students how to add polynomials Questioning- Ask students many questions and examples Practice- Practice with a classmate using individual whiteboards. Quiz- Students take a quiz to see if they understand

Summative: Presentation- Students present to the class an example of adding polynomials. Test- Students are tested in detail on material

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: a. Students need to know how to identify polynomial and rational functions. Acceptable Evidence: I need to be able to see that the students understand the difference from functions, polynomial functions and rational functions. Acceptable Evidence: I need to be able to see that students are able to perform operations on polynomial functions and they know all the different rules. Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities: This will be a lecture presentation where I will provide the students with many examples and information. I will allow students to ask questions if they need to and to communicate with me. This lecture will shows students what a polynomial function is and a rational function. Students will be able to take notes. At the end of the lecture they will have a worksheet to complete to make sure I know they understand the material.

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: b. Students need to know how to perform algebraic operations with polynomial and rational functions.
Lesson Activities: This will be a class activity where students use the computer a look at different websites and information on polynomials. Then they have to answer many questions on the websites and on paper. They may work together with a partner.

Lesson 3

Student Learning Objective: c. Students understand how polynomials factor.

Acceptable Evidence: Students need to know a way to connect the different terms of factoring polynomials and make sense.

Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction

Lesson Activities: This will be a challenge to students where they need to create a graphic organizer. The graphic organizer needs to make sense and show me that they understand the concept of factoring polynomials.
