High Frequency Words/Sight Words

This is a short list of some of the high frequency words that the 1st grade students must be able to spell, pronounce, write, and use in a sentence.

And, as, be, but, can, come, does, did, eat, eight, from, for, goes, got, had, has, if, is, just, know, let, me, my, not, now, of, our, put, pull, read, right, see, say, the, there, us, use, very, was, want, where, when, which, why, you.

DORF Reading

DORF Reading Assessment will be given to each student to determine reading level and to build reading skills Child is timed at 1 minute and reads out loud to the teacher a given story. Number of correct and incorrect words are calculated for the over all score completed in one minute. This overall score gives the final DORF Words Correct Median.

The following questions should be asked of each student


Phonics: What are the vowels? Phonics Decoding: What are the long & short vowels? High Frequency Words/Sight Words: Words that appear frequently Can the student spell, pronounce and use these words?

Comprehension: Child reading and comprehension skills


How fast can child read from DORF Words Test? Can the student Comprehend stories read, Title of story, main characters, what happens first, what happens next. Information and study skills: Can student understand the assignment and completed correctly? Is homework completed? Spelling: Is student able to correctly spell sight words? Vocabulary: Is student able to correctly define and pronounce sight words? Grammar: Is student able to use sight words in a sentence correctly?

Writing skills: Is student able to print upper and lower case letters? Does student use correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence use overall?
Total overall performance: Is student meeting standards of each section for language arts?
