Waiter: Role card Take the customers orders. Remember: There are a lot of chicken wings and lamb chops, so recommend them! Theres only enough salmon for one person. Theres only one piece of chocolate cake. There's no white wine left. Be polite! You arent very good at mathematics. Make a small mistake in the bill.

Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each group of three or four students. Procedure Revise restaurant phrases, e.g. Are you ready to order? What would you like? Ill have... Can I have...? Split the class into groups of three or four. One student from each group is the waiter. The other students will be the customers. If possible, arrange the chairs in tables in the classroom to look like a restaurant. Give the waiters two menus each (one to give the customers and one to use to calculate the bill), and some paper and a pencil to take the orders. All the customers go out of the class in their groups. Each group comes into the class and asks their waiter for a table, and a menu. While the customers are reading the menu to decide what they want, give the waiters their role cards to read. Then the waiters take the orders and bring the meals. Encourage customers to complain if there are any problems when they receive their meals. When they have ordered all courses, drinks, etc. the customers should ask for the bill. Get the waiters to add up the bill (using their menu). At the same time, the customers work out what they think the bill should be. The waiter gives the customers the bill. If the customers think it is wrong, they should say so. At the end of the role-play, ask the customers to give marks out of ten for the waiters.
