Banks Dimensions of Multicultural Education

1.

from a variety of cultures and groups are used. This inclusion of ethnic and cultural content should be logical, not contrived.

2.

The Knowledge Construction Process: the activities and

questions used to help students understand how implicit cultural perspectives and biases influence the ways knowledge in constructed. Teachers help students to understand how knowledge is created and how it is influenced by racial and social-class positions of groups.

3.

Prejudice Reduction: the characteristics of students attitudes

toward race and the strategies used to help them develop more democratic attitudes. Effective curricular interventions can help students develop positive racial attitudes.

4.

An Equity Pedagogy: teaching is modified to facilitate the

academic achievement of culturally, racially, ethnically, and language diverse groups. Teaching is modified to draw on cultural and language strengths to increase achievement from these groups.

5.

An Empowering School Culture and Social Structure: to

restructure the organization of the school to support racially and ethnically diverse students. To achieve this equality, the culture and organization of the school must be examined to determine the areas that foster or hinder educational equity.
