March 3, 2014 Name: Kara Wenberg Lesson Title: The Black Death Context: The students have been

learning about the Middle Ages. We have wrapped up discussing feudalism, daily life, and Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire. They had a quiz on this material Friday and also discussed the Crusades and the Magna Carta. Today, we are moving forward and talking about the effect that the Black Death had on the European Middle Ages. We will discuss where the nursery rhyme Ring-around-the-rosy came from and what the Black Death entailed for its victims. We will also look at how feudal system and the Black Death relate. Plan Number: 2 Objectives: CCSS: 6.H.2.1 Explain how invasions, conquests, and migrations affected various civilizations, societies and regions (e.g. Mongol invasion, the Crusades, the Peopling of the Americas and Alexander the Great) 6.G.1.2 Explain the factors that influenced the movement of people, goods, and ideas and the effects of that movement on societies and regions over time (e.g. scarcity of resources, conquests, desire for wealth, disease and trade). SWBAT: Understand how people of varying classes lived in the Feudal society during the European Middle Ages Compare the structure of society to the Black Death Recall how the Black Death effected the Feudal Society Materials/Technology Resources: - Laptop - White board - YouTube videos of Ring Around the Rosy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_Ozq2W-Ptk - PowerPoint * - Black Death Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZy6XilXDZQ - Think-Pair-Share Worksheet* *NOTE: Can be found in appendix Time: 50 minutes Instructional Procedures/Steps: - Introduction (5 minutes): Students will work on their Warm-up as they enter the class: What are three things you hope to learn about the Black Death?

March 3, 2014 Activity (35 minutes): As a class we will talk about the Warm-up and see if anyone knows the true meaning behind Ring Around the Rosy. I will then pull up the YouTube video and ask the class to stand in a circle around the desks. We will do a class Ring Around the Rosy. After we complete this task the students will return to their seats and we will begin to breakdown what the lyrics mean and how it relates to The Black Death. After we do this I will open the next video, the song about The Black Death. Once we have watched this video I will have the students pair up with someone. They will be asked to get out a sheet of paper and do a thinkpair-share about how the Black Death and Feudalism related. If needed we will do a review on feudalism. Students will then share what they have come up with to the class. We will then return to the questions that we have talked about during the warm-up to see if we have answered any of the questions. Closure (10 minutes): We will review what we have learned today and go over any new vocabulary words that have come up during our discussion. I will also pass out their homework and discuss it with them. We will talk about what we will be doing tomorrow.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated by their participation in the class discussion of the nursery rhyme as well as their think-pair-share. Accommodations: This class is unique. Student A and B have behavior issues. They will be placed in the circle in certain spots where they cannot fall into something or knock something over on purpose. I will also be using the mic for the DHH student. Appendix: A. PowerPoint
