2014 State Standards/Benchmarks: 6120-55-Compare the cost and benefits of purchasing vs. leasing a vehicle Lesson Essential Question: Should I buy or lease a car? Time Required: 180 minutes What will I differentiate? Process Students will be given a choice whether to work in a group or individually when completing project and vehicle comparison activity. Product-Students will be given a choice of either creating a PowerPoint presentation, YouTube video, Microsoft publisher magazine cover, or a poster (manually or electronically). How will I differentiate? For Readiness Begin with a simple concept (driving a car) and work up to the more complex concept (financial responsible of car ownership) Interest-Real-Life Applications-Ownership of car Learning-Flexible learning (Group or individual) As a result of this lesson/unit students will: Understand: The choices a consumer has when buying a car Know: How to get the best deal when buying a car Different methods of buying a car Methods of financing a car

Do (Skills): Students as future consumers will be able to apply car buying methods in order to make the best purchase to meet their driving needs and financial budget. Pre-Assessment: Begin class by asking which students drive? What kind of car do you drive? What kind of cars do your friends drive? Then discuss what car each student wish to drive in the future and what price they think their particular dream car will cost. Steps in the Lesson: (Include ideas for whole-class instructions, if any; differentiated activities; sharing, etc.) 1. Begin class by discussing various types of vehicles students drive.(whole-class) 2. Distribute the All about Cars Worksheet for students to fill in as they view All About Cars video.(whole-class) 3. Discuss All about Cars video and provide correct answers for the worksheet completed during the video. (whole-class) 4. Distribute the Vehicle Comparison Activity. Students are allow to work in groups or individual in order to complete the comparisons activity.(differentiated) 5. Discuss individual and group findings. (Whole-class) 6. Introduce Vehicle Analysis Project by handing out the Monthly Vehicle Cost Analysis Activity. Instruct class to calculate how much their chosen cars will cost each month using online car loan calculator. Students will be given four different project options. In addition students may choice to work alone or in groups. (differentiated) 7. Students will inform teacher of project option selected and group/nogroup.(whole-class) End of Day One 1. Begin day two by discussing the car costs per month for each groups & individuals. (sharing) 2. Allow class time for students to work on projects. Inform students of the time frame for completion of the project. (differentiated) 3. Each group or individual will give a brief summation of their finds and share projects with class. (sharing) Closure Activity/Wrap up: Students will present their Vehicle Analysis projects to the class. Provide for time to reflect on the student preferences of the project.

Post-Assessment: Were students engaged in the learning process? Did students struggle or need more help? Were advanced learners given enough freedom in designing projects?
