Coop. Initials Allotted Time 30 minutes Floating Eggs Grade Level Kindergarten Section

Subject or Topic: STANDARD:

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): 3.2K.A1-Identify and classify objects by observable properties of matter. Compare different kinds of materials and discuss their uses. II. Instructional Materials Water 2 dozen eggs Salt 2 tall drinking glasses III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) Prerequisite skills- knowledge of floating and density of different liquids. Key Vocabulary- density- the measurement of how solid something is. Big Idea- Which is Denser: Salt water or tap water? IV. Implementation A. Introduction Show pictures of the Dead Sea in Israel. Why do you think people can float in the water without a raft? Would you like to do that? Do you think it has to do with density, like we talked about yesterday? B. Development 1. Students will work in groups of 4. Each table will have two glasses of water, on with just plain water and one filled halfway with salt water, half with plain water (do not mix). 2. Drop an egg into the glass with plain water, have students draw a picture of what happened to the egg.

3. Next, drop an egg into the glass with half salt water, half plain water. Have students record what they see. The egg should be floating in the middle of the cup because it is floating on the surface of the salt water. C. Closure Salt water is denser than plain water; therefore some things will float in the ocean but sink in a lake or pool. D. Accommodations/Differentiation For the student with the hearing impairment, we will write the procedure on the board and have sheet with the instructions on it so they will be able to follow the written directions, instead of relying on verbal instructions. E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan 1. Formative- The inquiry sheets will be collected and reviewed to see how well students understood the lesson. Also, during the lesson, I will have a checklist as I walk around the room making sure students are participation and engaging in the activity. 2. Summative- there is no summative for this lesson.

V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (after lesson is taught) Remediation Plan B. Personal Reflection 1. How could this lesson be improved? 2. Did students benefit from the inquiry sheet? 3. Was there enough time for the lesson? VI. Resources
