2 Preparing Learners for the Assessment

Lauren Howell

a. What instructional strategies will you use as part of the assessment? Provide a rationale for your choices. I will be implementing instructional strategies such as modeling, guiding, and having students justify their answers. I will model several examples before having students try a problem on their own. I will ensure that each child understands my examples before moving on. While students are working independently, I will walk around the room and observe how they are working their problems. I will provide guidance for students who need extra help or seem to be struggling. When students answer questions aloud, I will have them justify their answers by explaining how they came to that particular answer.

b. What learning activities and student groupings will you use to prepare your students for the assessment? Provide a rationale for your choices. Students will be participating in several learning activities. First, I will allow several students to come to the board and explain how they found their answer. They will work out their problems on the board, showing the class how they solved the problem step-by-step. Next, I will pair students with a partner and allow them to work a problem together. This will allow for students who are having a harder time working these kinds of problems to hear directions from a peer rather than just hearing it from me. Lastly, students will be working with manipulatives such as ones and tens rods. These rods will give the students a hands-on example of how to add and subtract two digit numbers and will reinforce what we have learned in class.

c. What materials and resources, including technology, will you use to administer the assessment? Provide a rationale for your choices. Students will be allowed to use their tens and ones rods and pre-made hundred charts during the test. There will be no use of technology during the actual assessment. I am allowing students to use these resources because we have used them during instruction. Eventually, I would steer them away from these resources to ensure that they are not entirely dependent on them. However, while students are beginning this kind of Math, these resources are helpful to them.
