The Great Sioux Nation My paternal family originated from the Sioux Indian tribe. The Sioux Indians came to North America from Asia about 30,000 years ago. The name Sioux means, Little Snake and they are best recognized for their long jet-black hair that represents there past Asian life. The Sioux Indians were typically nomadic, meaning they rarely stayed in one place, but after the Trail of Tears they settled around the mid-west in the Great Plains. The reservation was divided among seven different Sioux Indian tribes that had its own governing system. Each individual Sioux tribe had there own flag. The flag represented a certain part of that tribe: usually something that represented farming, hunting and gathering. The Sioux Indians most notable Indian chief was Sioux Chief Sitting Bull. He was a holy man and a great leader. He is most well known for going to war at the age of fourteen. Also, he led his people in the battle of Little Big Horn in 1876 were they defeated Custer, this will later be known as Custers Last Stand. A tragic event that struck the Sioux nation was at the Battle of Wounded Knee in 1890 where over 150 Sioux Indians were massacred.

Norris 2 Since the Sioux Indians is tied together by blood there isnt a way for non Native Americans to join the tribe. For people who share a lineage to the Sioux Indians they can join the tribe, but they have test performed on them. To make sure you share the same lineage as Sioux Indians, they extract your blood to see if you can join the tribe.
