Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson Name of Book Summer Olympic Events Level H - Nonfiction

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? With my small group of 3 students, we read through the Summer Olympic Events book and had a short conversation about whose sport was everyones favorite. After reading, I printed and laminated a comprehension worksheet which consisted of various Olympic sports and three different columns that read in water, on a track or field, and in a gym. The students had to draw, with a dry erase marker, from the picture of the sport to the column they thought it fit. I also printed and laminated a grammar and mechanics worksheet which consisted of eight base words and the students had to choose and circle with their marker the correct plural form of the base word that was provided. 2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn? The laminated worksheets worked really well with the small group I had. The fact that each student had their own worksheet and dry erase marker really excited them and got them engaged to want to work on the worksheet I provided for them. The students learned the location of various Olympic sports and they also learned the plural spellings of eight different base words. 3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading.) I really think the students soaked in the vocabulary by looking at the correct and incorrect forms of the base words. Instead of just the old fashioned spell the word out, the laminated worksheet made it a lot more fun and engaging for the small group I worked with. 4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation. There wasnt one specific experience, however; this week I noticed that the small group I work with are getting much more comfortable reading a page at a time. I have noticed that they arent as nervous, or shy, as they were in the beginning weeks working with me.
