Factoring Trinomials Lesson Plan

Teacher Name Subject Grade level Time duration Materials needed Morgan Brooks Algebra 1 8th 90 minutes iPad for the teacher Internet Access to the ShowMe application and a free account SmartBoard Tablet and/or laptop for each group of three students Student notes SOL A.2 The student will perform operations on polynomials including, c. Factoring completely first- and second-degree binomials and trinomials in one or two variables. During this lesson the students will demonstrate that they know how to factor second-degree trinomials using the grouping method. This will help the students better understand and remember how to factor using this method. By the end of the lesson the students will have demonstrated proficiency in using the grouping method. During this lesson the students will use their tablet or laptop to create a video or screencast that demonstrates their ability to factor second-degree trinomials using the grouping method. The students may use applications like ShowMe, ScreenChomp, the iPad video camera, ScreenR, Jing, MovieMaker, etc. Explain the assignment Demonstrate to the students what you want them to do by creating an example in front of the class o Connect the iPad to the SmartBoard and use ShowMe to create your example o The example will be similar to this ShowMe ( http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=tbrk3f6 ) and will be uploaded to the class website when it is complete Assign the students three problems to solve The students will then work in groups of three to create their ShowMe video. o Each student will record himself or herself solving one of the problems for their group video. Students may ask the teacher questions or refer to their notes throughout the assignment Once the students are done they will post a link to their video or screencast on the class webpage The teacher will use the students video or screencast to assess the students ability to factor second-degree trinomials using the grouping method. The teacher will also informally assess the students performance by observing

The lesson plan above relates to the NET-Teacher (NETS-T) standards and Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIPS) in a number of ways. The first NETS-T standard is covered because throughout this assignment the students are encouraged to use their creativity and knowledge to produce their own video or screencast using the tool of their choice. The students are working collaboratively and advancing their knowledge of the subject. The second NETS-T standard is covered as well because the teacher has developed an authentic learning experience for the students where they are able to create something to share with their peers and build their knowledge of the subject. The teacher is also incorporating the third NETS-T standard by demonstrating how to build a product similar to what the students are asked to create and the fourth standard is covered in part because the teacher is demonstrating responsible use of the technology to complete the task. Lastly, the fifth and final NETST standards is covered because the teacher is demonstrating that they are continuing to learn about the latest technological tools and, promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources, (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, p. 2). A number of the TSIPs are covered by this lesson as well. The teacher is demonstrating proficiency in TSIP A because they are demonstrating the use of the iPad and the iPad software application, ShowMe. They are also demonstrating proficiency in the use of the SmartBoard and the program allowing the iPad screen to be displayed on the SmartBoard. The teacher is demonstrating proficiency in TSIP D as well because they are using the technology to create information to exchange with the students via the classroom and class website. In addition, they are also demonstrating proficiency in TSIP E because they are showing they are, able to identify, locate, evaluate, and use appropriate instructional hardware and software to support Virginias Standards of Learning, (Virginia Department of Education, 1998, para. 5) and part of TSIP F because they are using the technologies to communicate and present information within the curriculum. TSIP G is covered as well because the

students are able to choose the hardware and software that best suits their needs and work with partners to help them with any difficulties and TSIP H is covered in part because the teacher is demonstrating appropriate and responsible use of technology.
