G.6-8.3.4 2003 Describe ways in which students can support those who are being bullied. G.6-8.3.5 2003 Describe how assertiveness can be used to help prevent bullying. Learning Objective(s): Parents will gain information on what bullying is and isnt, identify signs that may indicate a student is being bullied, and understand district protocol for how bullying incidents are handled. Collaborative Partners (who can assist with this lesson?): Resource Officer or security personnel (Officer Edwards), School Counselor (Sue Spomer) Materials Needed: Handouts, note cards, pens/pencils Activity Summary: 40-45 minutes total 1. Introductions 2. Activity for parents writing down questions/what information they would like to receive from this presentation 3. Review of Indiana Code and Bullying law 1423 adopted/revised 9/25/2013 4. Main Points of law 5. Indicators 6. School protocol 7. Guest Speaker School Resource or Security Officer, School Counselor 8. Resources (Brochure) 9. Q & A to answer any questions not answered during the presentation 10. Post test

Introductions Caitlin, Lara, School Counselor, Resource Officer (5 min.) 2. Parent Card Activity have parents write down what they think is their definition of bullying, then have them write down their questions or what they want to find out from the information session. Have parents offer their definitions of bullying, but hold on to their questions til the end. (5 min) 3. Introduce Indiana Code that addresses Bullying (have handout available) (5 min.) 4. Discuss main points of the law including: - what bullying is: provide definition, use handout of stool to convey three main points - what bullying is not: provide examples (5 min.) 5. Review the warning signs of potential bullying, provide handout (5 min.) 6. Discuss and review the Washington reporting protocol for bullying; touch on main points (48 hour timeframe, reporting contacts, state requirements for reporting) (5 min.) 7. Introduce resource officer/school counselor to discuss specific school reporting procedure (5 min.) 8. Provide Resources brochure, discuss useful websites (5 min.) 9. Q & A to answer questions not covered in the discussion (5-10 min.) 10. Post-test (5 min.)
