STANDARD: 3.2.K.A1- Identify and classify objects by observable properties of matter. Compare different kinds of materials and discuss their uses. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): Kindergarten students will experiment how many pennies will sink the aluminum foil. II. Instructional Materials Handout Aluminum Foil Tub Water Pennies III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) A. Prerequisite skills Density Weight Counting What we learned in yesterdays lesson B. Key vocabulary Density Weight distribution Balance C. Big Idea How an object can cause another object to sink or float. IV. Implementation A. Introduction Questions o Do you like building things?

o What do you usually build? o What objects do you use to build things? We will be building aluminum foil boats together as a class. This will be used later in our lesson. o We will have an instructional video playing as we make our boats. We will take it a step at a time.

B. Development 1. First students will be put in groups of four with 100 pennies. 2. Students will be given a tub of water with an aluminum foil boat (which they created) and pennies. 3. They will put the boat in the water and calculate how many pennies it takes for the boat to sink. 4. They will be given a handout which they will record a tally representing each penny. C. Closure The students discovered how many pennies it took for the boat to sink. We will review their handout and see what conclusions they made. We will record everyones number of pennies on the board and compare everyones answers together. o We will see if everyones numbers were around the same spot or if they were far apart. Tomorrow we will see how we can create a rainbow using a bottle and different liquids. D. Accommodations/Differentiation We will provide a paper of directions on how to make the boat so each child can read and follow along as we go. E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan We will collect the worksheet and compare the students data. We will also have a class discussion at the end of the lesson. 1. Formative- We will have a checklist to make sure everyone is participating in the procedure and also have a class discussion at the end of the lesson. 2. Summative- There is no summative for this lesson

V. Reflective Response A. Personal Reflection How can this lesson be improved? Did the students learn what they needed from this lesson?
