Question: Do plants both photosynthesize and conduct cellular respiration? Procedure: 1. First put ! "ra#s o$ radish seedlin"s into each petri dish lined %ith da#p paper to%els. 2. &ut hal$ o$ the petri dishes into a dark cupboard and put the other hal$ under a li"ht. 3. 'et the radish seeds "ro% $or ( days. ). Find the tallest seedlin" and #easure its hei"ht. !. *e#ove everythin" $ro# the petri dish +e,cept $or the paper to%el- and dehydrate overni"ht. .. /easure %ei"ht o$ dehydrated bio#ass separately $or each petri dish. (. 0alculate the di$$erence in bio#ass bet%een ori"inal bio#ass +! "ra#s- and $inal %ei"ht. Hypothesis: 1$ %e "ro% 0.! "ra#s o$ radish seed in the li"ht and 0.! radish seed in the dark then 1 think that the plants in the li"ht treat#ent plants %ill have a lar"er bio#ass then the plants in the dark because the plants kept in the li"ht %ill have been able to photosynthesis %hile the plants in the dark %ill have lost %ei"ht durin" the process o$ cellular respiration.

Results: 4he radish seedlin"s not e,posed to li"ht had lost bio#ass. 4he ran"e o$ the bio#ass %as $ro# 50.2 to 50.1. the avera"e chan"e in bio#ass %as 50.13. 4he color %as pale yello% and the hei"ht o$ the tallest sprout %as ).. c#. 4he radish seedlin"s e,posed to li"ht had "ained bio#ass the ran"e o$ bio#ass %as $ro# 0.0 to 0.( 4he avera"e chan"e in bio#ass %as .2. 4he color o$ the sprout %as "reen %ith red ste#s and the hei"ht o$ the tallest sprout %as 1.)c#.

Discussion: 4he results o$ the e,peri#ent %ere partly une, pected and partly e,pected. 1n #y hypothesis 1 had predicted a %ei"ht increase to sho% in the li"ht treat#ent sa#ple this did happen. 1 did not ho%ever e,pect to see a %ei"ht decrease in the plants that %ere e,posed to li"ht. 1 also co#pletely ne"lected to even predict so#ethin" unusual %ould happen to the plant6s hei"ht. 4he results collected sho% that plants do indeed conduct both photosynthesis and cellular respiration. 4he plants e,posed to li"ht had "ained bio#ass since %e kno% that #atter cannot be created nor destroyed %e can see that the plant is pre$or#in" a process %hich is responsible $or the bio#ass increase. Further the li"ht treat#ent plant %as short and "reen the hei"ht o$ the plants depends on ho% soon it reaches li"ht the sooner it sees li"ht the "reener the color beco#es %hich indicates chloroplasts are present +the cell that conducts

photosynthesis.- 4he plants kept in the dark had lost bio#ass sa#e rule no creation or destruction o$ #atter this #eans a process is also "oin" on convertin" the #atter to another $or# and usin" the ener"y it "ets $ro# the reaction this process is called cellular respiration. 7ro%in" tall as a plant 1 8e,pensive9 1$ li"ht is present it #akes no sense $or the plant to "ro% taller. 1nstead the plant be"ins to convert carbon dio,ide alon" %ith %ater into "lucose to "ain %ei"ht. 4he plants in the dark lost bio#ass because they %ere conductin" cellular respiration and not photosynthesis. 4he "lucose in the endosper# $ueled the plant leavin" :2 as a product

Conclusion: &lants can conduct both photosynthesis and cellular respiration. ;e can tell this because the plants "ained %ei"ht i$ they %ere e,posed to li"ht other%ise the plants lost %ei"ht because they %ould not be able to conduct photosynthesis. < possibility o$ error in our e,peri#ent %as durin" the observation o$ the sprouts the dark treat#ent sa#ples had been e,posed to li"ht possibly "ivin" the# enou"h ti#e to photosynthesis. 4o #ake this e,peri#ent provide even #ore in$or#ation on cellular respiration %e can use 4etrazoliu# 0hloride a color chan"e indicator that turns a red color %hen is in contact %ith parts o$ a cell that conduct cellular respiration.
