Trisha Savino Professor Padgett English 1102 February 26, 2014 Annotated Bibliography Inquiry: Does social media

affect students? Thesis: Social media greatly affects the students who use it. English, Marianne. "Discovery Health." Discovery Fit and Health. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. The author of this article, Marianne English who is a science writer at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, says that social media can have a big influence on people becoming depressed. She writes, Whether were subconsciously comparing ourselves to friends or feeling the sting of rejection, our emotions transcend the keyboard. Any person who uses social media can verify how it is almost impossible to look at these sites without comparing oneself to others. People are constantly comparing themselves to other without even realizing it. Some research recognizes an association between depression and Internet use, but figuring out causation is tricky, says Marianna England. Although people do not know exactly how or why social media contributes to depression, it is certain that it can.

Gonzales, A. n. page. <http://www.med.upenn.edu/chbr/documents/AmyGonzalesPublicHealthandSocialMediaTalk.pdf>. Social media can play both a positive and negative role in students mental health. Middle school students are arguably the most affected age group. The article states, According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, social media sites can help develop a childs

communication, social interaction, sense of community and technical skills. While social media sites are entertaining and amusing, they also teach these students necessary skills without them even knowing it. On the contrary, these sites can lead to negative outcomes for these students. The article also mentions, In some children, these types of encounters and online popularity contests can lead to low self esteem, peer pressure and can cause or worsen anxiety or depression. Along with that, cyber bullying is very common in middle school, which could lead to depression, isolation, and even suicide, in rare cases. While it is understood that social media has pros and cons, it is pretty obvious that the risks are greater than the advantages for middle school age kids.

Carroll, J.A. & Kirkpatrick, R.L. (2011). Impact of social media on adolescent behavioral health. Oakland, CA: California Adolescent Health Collaborative. The risks mentioned in this article are much bigger than just a damaged self-esteem. The author says, While media use is an integral part of the daily life of adolescents, there are a number of risks associated with social media use, specifically, negative effects on mental health, cyberbullying, texting/sexting, dangers of sexual solicitation, and exposure to problematic and illegal content and privacy violations. Teenagers are not always rational when making decisions and with social media it is easier than ever to make poor decisions over the Internet. Since there is no face-to-face interaction, it makes it easier to do or say whatever a person pleases because the risks do not seem as real. However, they are very real. A simple mistake on a social media site, something as small as an inappropriate picture, can ruin a persons reputation forever. The Internet is limitless, however, so are its consequences.

Atwal, Andrew. "Latest News." Youth Today. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. Atwal, who currently works for the Press of Atlantic City, recognizes the positives and negative affects of social media on students. A unique way that the Internet is helpful is that it teaches social skills in a non traditional way to a person who is socially awkward, shy, or introverted. The negative part is that social media can be very distracting to students and negatively affect their grades. Atwal states in his article that, A study of students studying showed that, on average, students lose focus on studying about every three minutes. It is obvious that sites like Facebook or Twitter play a part in this. Any student could confirm that the reason that students can pay attention while studying is because of the urge to look at ones phone. A shocking statistic in the article reveals that todays youth is dependent on technology and social media. The study done by Wakefield Research states, 73 percent of college students cannot study without some form of technology present, and 38 percent cannot go more than 10 minutes without checking their phone, computer, or other related forms of technology. It appears that social media has put its users into a trance where people are, in a way, addicted to it.

Collier, Anne. "To Grasp Social Medias Effects, We Need a Grasp on Social Media!" ConnectSafely. N.p., 24 Oct. 2013. Web. 27 Feb. 2014. Collier, editor of NetFamilyNews.org and the co director of connectsafely.org, mentions an important point that social media is a great way to communicate to others. While everyone knows Facebook is a simple and fast way to chat with friends, it is also a way to raise awareness and gain support for things such as fundraisers, events, etc. Social media is good while using it actively, but while using it passively, especially just because a person is bored, is where the problems occur. Collier says, If a studys looking at passive use, the overriding impact is more

likely to be boredom or something even more negative. If the level of engagement is active or even creative, the conclusion is likely to be positive. Social media can be negative or positive; it is up to the user to decide how to use it. Trish, I like the direction you seem to be going in, but Im not sure about the quality of all of these sources. It looks like you have mostly web sources and without the url. Also it seems as though you dont have any peer-reviewed sources. If youre going to engage in academic discourse, you need to engage peer-reviewed sources. Your thesis also seems much too broad. You could make the argument that we need to fix our country or you could argue that we need to fix education in this country by implementing this new law. See how the latter is a much more helpful thesis than the former. You thesis needs to be making a clear and precise argument. How, specifically, is social media affecting young people? What problem do you hope to solve? I need more development here.
