Goals and Objective By the end of this lesson the students will be able to show their understanding of editing and the editing symbols by
being able to edit 2 paragraphs on their editing computer game.
Summary The students will be given a brief lesson about the editing symbols. They will then open a program on the computer and
play a game that will help them practice their editing skills. After 10 minutes the students will print out and exchange
with their neighbor their short stories they have been working on for 2 weeks, if they are ready to move on to the
editing stage. The teacher will collect their editied stories and grade for correct editing symbols and any missed errors.

LESSON ACCOMODATIONS
Content Editing symbols. Use handout.
Multiculturalism & Diversity The student who have trouble reading will be given the option to have the paragraphs read to and will have one on one
help by the teachers in the room.
Lesson Integration The students short stories are about what their lives would be like if they were living during the civil war. This lesson
integrates social studies, and the writing process.
IMPLEMENTATION
Anticipatory Set The teacher will have a small poster board with all of the editing symbols on it and what they are used for. She will go
through each one with the class.
Input The teacher will write three sentences on the board and ask the students to come to the board and make the proper
corrections with the right symbols. The studnets should be able to recognize misspelled words, proper sentences, and
punctuation.
Model Teacher will write three sentences on the board that contain errors.
She will ask random students to come to the board and make one correction.
She will have the game open for the students on each computer. She will put the game on the dock cam and will do one
example game with the class.
They will then be asked to go to a computer and will be given 8-10 minutes to play the computer game.
Check Understanding Teacher will give a quick verbal quiz on what the symbols mean to the students who look like they aren't paying
attention.
Guided Practice The teacher will ask the class to go to the attached website. She will put the first paragraph that needs to be corrected
on the overhead and have the class correct together. She will then instruct the class to correct 2 paragraphs on their
own. Teacher will walk around and help any students that need guidence.

Independent practice The students who have a completed paper will trade stories with the person sitting next to them and peer edit their
work. They will be instructed to first read the persons entire story, then go back and correct any errors they see and
mark them with the proper symbols.
Closure The teacher will explain that the reason we use these editing sybpls is so we don't waste time writing out the mistakes.
It is a quick, easy way to correct someones writing.
Assessment Description Teacher will collect the students stories (with their editing partners name on it). She will look to see the proper symbol
use and any missed errors. This will count as a participation grade.
Assessment/Rubrics Hypothetical questions: "What symbol do we use for sentences that don't make any sense?"
Answer: "Figure out what is wrong with the sentence (wrong words, words in the wrong places, etc) and correct that."
Teacher will give example.
Question: "What is the point of using these symbols"
Answer: "It is a quicker, easier way to edit peoples work."
Question: If we get done early can we play games?"
Answer: No. I am going to ask that you begin working on your final draft, making the changes you need to make that
your partner discovered.
