Interview Questions 1. Please state your name? -Mike Corbett 2. Can you tell me a little about yourself?

-21 yr old; French, Intl Studies, and German Major, came from French high school in Chicago, is a junior 2. What is your role within Model United Nations? -Vice President Internal- teach org and give delegate skills, public speaking, motivational and informational speeches, differences in caucusing (moderated= formal un-moderated= informal) -Next year- Vice President External- booking hotels, flights, buses, and anything having to do with external affairs -Resolution is non-binding international law so Member States (Countries) dont have to follow them, they are suggestions, but if from Security Council they do have to follow them 3. Can you briefly describe for me what Model United Nations is? -On campus simulates the United Nations, takes whatever happens within the real united nations and uses it at conferences at both collegiate and high school levels 4. How are you an insider within this community? -2nd year with org, known a lot of older members and Veterans, and was introduced by them, and best way to become a veteran is to know a veteran 5. How does this community use specific genres within the classroom? -fact we have to prepare and get all research together, go through tons of sources such as cnn, bbc, etc., personal resources, UN website and look at their resolutions, lot of different written genres -Simulations- we try to get about 30ppl who each rep a country such as france, us, Germany, china, Russia, and choose a topic, such as the Ukraine and national security and how to resolve that ongoing topic, and for about two hours we debate military force, sanctions, etc to help Ukraine, and cover all different aspects of global problems and solutions 6. How does this community use specific genres within conferences? -All sorts used, motivational and informational speaking, info more using statistics and facts, and motivational wanting to evoke emotion; resolution- uses perambulatory and operative clauses (operative are more like direct solutions)

How does this community communicate differently from other communities both within the classroom and within the conferences? -Specific terms: Thank you honorable chair, the republic of Poland is present and voting, motion for moderated caucus with a fifteen second speakers time for such and such topic -not hard language to learn, just really practicing at different conferences 8. What are some of the mechanics of this community that make it unique? -the people that you meet, very global type organization and community, last month he went to Harvard Worlds with 2000 people there for a Model UN conference, biggest conference in the world, and 62 countries were represented -meet a lot of like-minded but different people from all corners of the world, and its great because you develop relationships and friendships with people you never thought youd meet just because you go and debate with people interested in international politics 9. How do you become a part of a community like this? -go to your local Model UN and ask to be a member, shouldnt be denied ever if you sincerely want to join, ask for information, starts with you 10. What are some textual or visual evidences of genres within this particular community? -resolutions that are passed because they are written at conferences during un-moderated caucuses and can be any length; video of someone giving a speech 11. What is your personal opinion of the demographics of this community? -definitely diverse group of people, members of lgbt community females males no matter what race, big sense of family when it comes to MUN, doesnt matter who you are we are trying to get the same idea out and promote that, and it couldnt be better 12. What is your impression of how the demographics of this community affect the interactions and discourse of the community? -positive way even though everyone has their differences at one point or another and trying to diplomatically try to solve our problems and take what we learn from Model UN and apply it to our own lives and thats the beauty of it.
