Tyrika Scott 1/27/14 Professor Hinnant EIP Proposal

Extended Inquiry Project Proposal

For this project, the focus will be on the recovering student addicts here on the campus of UNC Charlotte. The students who are on the road to recovery are a part of the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC). The Collegiate Recovery program offers weekly 12 step meetings, experiential activities, peer-mentorship and also volunteer opportunities where sober students serve their community, build friendships, develop a solid support system, and help make a lifelong difference in their lives. I decided to study and observe this group of people because I think it would be really worthy to get to know them, and to listen to their stories or life events. Understanding the true them, providing support, and most importantly being a friend. It would be important to observe how they react with other recovering students, and the volunteers. The main inquiry question of this study is, How does being on a college campus affect the recovery process? The questions that led to this were: Is the program making a great impact on their lives? Is it hard to not revert back to old habits while staying on campus? Are they faced with dilemmas often? How does being around other recovering addicts affect them? Has recovering always been easy or difficult? What kind of things increase your desire to use? Whats the best method used to help with recovering from addictions? What methods dont work?
Commented [B3]: I think these are all really strong smaller inquiry questions, but how are you going to observe all of this? Commented [B2]: Why? This might be good place to introduce your overarching question or angle. Commented [B1]: Nice introduction. I think you give just enough background information to get your reader interested in your research.

From the outside looking in, you can never understand it. These questions will help formulate the information that is relevant to this group of students and give light to their journey of recovery.
Commented [B4]: Im not sure how well this conclusion is working. Perhaps in revision you could add, instead, how youre going to actually conduct your research.

Tyrika, Im so glad youve found a topic that youre interested in and that works well in conjunction with the overall goals of the EIP! In terms of the research itself, everything youve presented here seems like it will work well. My only concern is that some of your questions may only find answers through interview, and (as you know) Id like for most of your arguments/conclusions to come from observation (about 85%). However, I do think there might be ways to reword or rephrase them so that they lend themselves more to that specific type of primary research. In terms of the actual writing, I think that in revision some dealings with re-organization might help. Introducing your overarching question earlier will keep your reader engaged and, because some of your questions do seem predominantly interviewbased, you may want to skip the conclusion in lieu of an explanation of how youre actually going to go about conducting research. Nice job, overall.
