(Introduction / first slide) Michelle and I picked the topic of Turning Negative thoughts into positive thinking.

What if from childhood you were given: - Extra Confidence - Double determination - More belief in the outcomes Would you: - Have a better job - Have more money - Have a different personal life Our success or failure in anything, large or small, it will depend on our programming, what we accept from others as a view of ourselves and what we say when we talk to ourselves. What you put in, you get out, the brain simply believes what you tell it the most, it doesnt matter if you believe it or not, and it doesnt care if it is right or wrong, positive or negative. What you think you will become. (Second slide) It makes sense then that the unconscious conditioning we received from others as children has become the foundation for what our beliefs and thoughts are of ourselves today; youre not musical, youre not sporty, youre so shy, youre not very creative, etc. ( Tiffany; I know growing up my was somewhat verbally abusive and I remember a specific time that he had followed my mom to a dance club or saw her coming out and he called to talk to her and told me he had seen her and not to say anything so I didnt, when my mom got home she mentioned that she saw my dad in the parking lot long story short he found out she knew and shook & pointed his finger in my face and called me mouth big mouth am I ? Do I blabber things that I shouldnt? ) We hear "No" or we are told that we can't do something more than 148,000 times by the time we

reach age 18. So what do you think the result of that is going to be? Naturally: Unintentional negative programming. (Third Slide) The acronym ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts) can be used to describe the continued use of these unintentional negative thoughts because they are: Automatic they just seem to come into your mind without any effort. Distorted - they are not always supported by the things you know to be true. Unhelpful they keep you feeling depressed and make it difficult to change. Plausible - you accept them as facts and do not question them Involuntary - you do not choose to have them and they are very difficult to stop.

As much as 77% of everything we think is negative and counterproductive and works against us. I am not good at math I will never pass this class, I am so stupid, and I just dont get it. If we continually tell ourselves these things eventually we will believe them. (Fourth Slide) There are 4 types of negative thinking; All-or-Nothing Thinking. "I have to do things perfectly, because anything less than perfect is a failure. (All-or-nothing thinking is the most common type of negative thinking, and is the main cause of many problems including anxiety, depression, and addiction.), Disqualifying the Positives. "Life feels like one disappointment after another. Negative Self-Labeling. "I feel like a failure. I'm flawed. If people knew the real me, they wouldn't like me. Catastrophizing. If something is going to happen, it'll probably be the worst case scenario." Do any of these types of thinking hit home with any of you? I know for me they do. (While I am reading the paragraph below, Michelle starts putting the negative thoughts up on the board, make them go in sequence of the paragraph)

How many times have you said or heard other people say things like : I cant seem to get organized, Today just isnt my day, I never know what to say, I cant remember names, I can never afford the things I want, No matter what I do I cant seem to lose weight. I bet you didnt realize these were negative self-talk did you? (Create positive affirmations to go along with the negative statements) The more you think of yourself in a certain way, the more you will think about yourself in that way, we are not aware of the negative self-talk that happens on a daily basis, or that it is passed on to children and others. (Tiffany: In the Fall I took a Values and Self-Image class where we learned about self-talk, after I completed the module it was amazing how much more aware I was of this negative talk, and how often people use it. I had a math class where girls in there were constantly saying things like I am so stupid, I just cant do this, it was interesting to me that we all do it, that we all use some form of negative self-talk)

(Fifth Slide) Tonight Michelle and I are hoping that we can show you how to quiet those negative thoughts by reprogramming your mind with Positive Solutions. (This is where Michelle will take over with the positive reprogramming and thoughts) It takes five positive statements to offset the effects of one negative statement. What can we do to fix this, how can we reprogram our subconscious? Think of your brain as a computer, The Monitor is your appearance and actions, The Keyboard is equivalent to input through your senses and the Hard Disk is where everything is permanently stored. As the subconscious never sleeps, it needs a lot of repetition to overwrite a bad program. A positive attitude can only take you up to 90% of the way because Negative programming is in the way and we need to replace it with positive self-talk or positive programming. How can we do this?

(Sixth Slide) With Self-Talk this is simply a way to override our past negative programming by erasing or replacing it with conscious positive directions, creating a self that is governed by personal choice. Self-talk has five levels, levels 1 and 2 are the most harmful and negative, and 3, 4, and 5 are levels that begin the reprogramming. Level I The level of negative acceptance. This is the most harmful level of self-talk this is where you say something negative or bad about yourself and you accept it. It is the most easy to spot, it is most always characterized by the words I cant, or If only I could. This level works against us and unfortunately is the most frequently used self-talk of all, it represents everything from our simplest misgiving to the worst fears we have about ourselves. This is where we hesitate and question our capabilities, and accept less than we know we could have done. It is our way of hiding instead of boldly thriving. Level II Level of Recognitions and need to change. This level is misleading, in the this level you state to yourself and to others that you recognize a need to change, it is characterized by words like I need to , I ought to .. or I should.. It too works against us because it recognizes a problem but creates no solution. This level creates guilt, disappointment and acceptance of our selfimagined inadequacies. Level III The level of Decision to Change. This is the first level that works for us and not against us, in this level you recognize the need to change and also make the decision to do something about it. You state the decision in the present tense as though the change has already taken place. This level is characterized by the words I never I no longer This level only works when you are working at effecting a specific change. Level IV The level of the better you. This is the most effective level of self talk we can ever use. This is where you paint a completed picture of yourself, the way you really want to be and you are handing it to your subconscious saying This is the me I want you to create! Forget all that bad programming I gave you in the past, this is your new program. This level is characterized by words like I am, I am a winner, and I am in control of my life.

Level V The level of Universal Affirmation. This is the level of Universal Affirmation, its the self-talk of oneness with the universe or beliefs. It is characterized by words It is This level of self-talk has been spoken for thousands of years and comes from the ancient religions that inspired it. This level is for those who chose a spiritual path. For the person who has a belief in the divine, this is for the person who seeks something greater than what we can see with our eyes. This type of self talk sounds like: I am one with the universe and it is one with me. I am of it, I am within it, I am a shining spark of divine goodness. For some this is their daily mantra. This level is not necessary to have positive self-talk it is for those who chose an inner spiritual path. (Michelle) Before I started this project I believed I did have positive self-talk. I learned that there is a difference between a positive attitude and positive self-talk. Since the first day of class when I heard that we had to do a presentation fear took over. I tried to block it out for the last couple of months I was afraid! Just the other day I talked myself into a negative spiral and was not going to give this presentation because of level I and II self-talk. I was going to meet with Tiffany and tell her I cant do this. I cant get up in front of people. I havent been to school in years. Everyone is so much smarter than me. I have too much stress in my life financially. I didnt even realize it was levels I and II of self-talk until I consciously became aware of how I would feel if I didnt do the presentation. Where will I get the courage to stand up and talk in front of people? This is the reason I came to school. I want to stand up and be able to speak well and communicate in front of people. I started to see myself doing the presentation. I started to tell myself I can do this, I will do this, I am doing this and it will be a good experience instead of bad experience. I can I can I can. I started feeling more positive and actually having a good time once I sat down and just started working on the presentation...

(Seventh Slide) You can begin positive self-talk right now with levels III and IV and start reprogramming your mind. On the board oar positive solutions to the destructive negative self-talk most of us have. (Tiffany, will put up the positive solutions and

Michelle will discuss the positive affirmations to the negative thoughts - I cant seem to get organized, I am organized. Today just isnt my day.Today is a beautiful day, it is going to be a great day. , I cant remember names. I will make up a rhyme to help me remember names. ,I can never afford the things I want. I will put money away each paycheck so that I can get a new bike. , No matter what I do I cant seem to lose weight. I am going to start walking 30 minutes 3 times a week.) The more we recognize negative programming and begin positive self-talk the sooner we will be able to create change with positive solutions. A good way to start reprogramming is by keeping a daily, weekly, or monthly gratitude journal or just journaling and finding the positive things in each and every day. Our challenge to you today is to continue to keep your gratitude journals, and when you have those moments of self-doubt just try using some positive self-talk and see what happens. Remember, the subconscious mind is listening and waiting for our instructions. And it doesnt care what we tell it, it just does it.
