Spring 2014

Immersion I Lesson Plan Format Field Study Teacher: Jule Peterson School: Park Elementary Grade Level: 5th Number of Students in Class: 18 Unit: Mathematics Lesson Duration: 2 hours Day, Date, and Time of Lesson: 10:00 12:00 1. Objective(s): By the end of the lesson, students will categorize two-dimensional figures based on their properties.

2. Colorado Academic Standards: Content area: Mathematics Standard: 1. Shape, Dimension, and Geometric Relationships Concepts and skills students master:
2. Geometric figures can be described by their attributes and specific locations in the plane

evidence outcomes: c. Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. (CCSS: 5.G) ii. Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties. (CCSS: 5.G.4) 3. Learning Target(s): I can categorize two-dimensional figures based on their properties.

4. Assessment: Students will create a scale model of a building using various twodimensional figures. They will write a report explaining the figures they used and their properties.

5. Materials: Plenty of cardboard for students to cut up for their scale model, glue, tape, staples, two-dimensional worksheet.

6. Introduction/Anticipatory Set: We will look at various buildings and identify what shapes are being used. I will pose the question, Why do construction workers use certain twodimensional shapes for different purposes?

7. Essential Questions or Big Picture Statement: Why do we classify shapes? 8. ****Step-by-Step Lesson Process:****

Spring 2014

1. The lesson will begin with a construction worker (either a family member of a student or a community member) coming into our class and giving a mini-lesson on building structures. The focus will be shapes. What makes one shape different from another? 2. The construction worker will talk about what certain shapes are better for when building. (Direct Instruction) 30 minutes 3. She/He will model (using cardboard) how certain shapes provide different structure. The construction worker will cut out squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles, and guide the class in making a scale model building. 20 minutes 4. After the demonstration, the construction worker can answer questions or talk about any other important aspects of designing a building (such as including angles, straight lines, etc..) 10 minutes 5. Guided Practice: Students will then get into groups of four. They will look at various two-dimensional figures and classify them into categories based on their properties. a. As a class, we will go over answers and determine the correct properties (construction worker will still guide this portion). 15 minutes 6. Individual Practice: Students will show comprehension of two-dimensional shapes properties by completing a worksheet with various shapes and they must use their own words to describe the properties of each shape. 10 minutes 7. (More individual practice) Assessment: Students will begin creating their own miniature building using different shapes to create structure. The shapes will be cut out of cardboard and glued/taped/stapled together. Students will then write a short summary of their building. They must include what shapes were used and why. What properties of the figure made it especially useful? (This part of the lesson may have to be finished the next day) Remaining time
