Name: Jordyn Burke, McKenna Pierson, Emily Criswell, Lauren Lammlein Grade Level: 3rd Subject: Math Big

Idea/Lesson Focus: Fractions Essential Question: What are fractions?

Context for Learning: This is a traditional one teacher classroom consisting of 26 students. The gender ration is split equally with 13 girls and 13 boys. Two of these students are IEPs (speech and delayed reading/learning disability) The cultural make up is as follows: 13 Caucasian, 6 Asian Americans, 7 African Americans. There are no ELL students present. Function of the Lesson: -Introduce new skill or content -Practice Content Standards: 3.NF.A.1: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b Learning Objectives: Students will be able to understand the difference between numerators and denominators. Students will be able to create and analyze their own fractions Students will be able to apply fractions to common eating activities. Academic Language: *Define* Numerator Denominator Fraction Instructional Materials and Support: -Smart Board; PowerPoint Presentation -Wi-Fi -iPads (Simple Fractions Lite app) -Colored paper

-Scissors -Pencils/markers Prior Knowledge: Multiply, Divide, place value and patterns Introduction/Pre-Assessment: Each student will take a circle piece of paper and asked to divide it into what they feel is four equal parts. After the piece of paper is cut the student will then have to identify what of the circle is. Explicit Instruction: Relate their bell work to fractions in a power point presentation (use a diagram to show their pizza cut up in equal parts and relate each piece of the pizza to fractions: , , ) and introduce the vocabulary Structured/Guided Practice: Students will take turns coming up to the smart board and doing fraction examples on the easy learn app. The rest of the class will sit at their desks and participate on their iPads Independent Practice: Students will use the iPad to play with the fraction app on their own Closure/Post-Assessment Around the World with Fractions: Students will go head to head in identifying fractions. The student who is able to identify the specific fraction first will move onto the next level/opponent. The first student to go around the world (win rounds against all the students) will be declared the winner. Differentiation/Individualize Instruction Howard Gardner and Multiple Intelligences: Students who are more mathematical/logical learners will succeed better than those of other types of learners John Dewey and Cooperative Learning: Through the use of group work students will be able to assist each other in learning fractions while learning how to work as a team.
