(Chemistry)
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Name: James Womack Grade Level: 10-11

HS-PS1-1. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms. HS-PS1-2. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties. HS-PS1-7. Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during a chemical reaction. HSN-Q.A.1. Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.
Big Ideas:

Basic structure of atoms, sub-atomic particles, the evolution of the atomic theory, understanding the current atomic theory, the behavior of molecules during reaction, changes in the states of matter, and the periodic table.
Unit Goals and Objectives:

Understanding the basic structure of atoms, from the sub-atomic to the molecular level. Understanding the Periodic Table of Elements and become familiar with common elements, along with the trends shown in the organization of the table. Learning the evolution of the atomic theory, and how our perception on the structure of atoms has changed over history. Understanding the purpose and effects of sub-atomic particles, such as protons, neutrons, and electrons, and their effects on atomic structure and behavior. Understanding the changes in matter that elements can undergo, the difference of each state, and through what processes these changes occur. Learning the effects of molecules interacting with one another through types of chemical reactions.

Unit Summary:

The universe is an immense place, and our Earth is just a microscopic destination in comparison to the grandeur of known space. But there's one thing that the entire universe has in common, everything is composed of matter. From the flying chunk of space rock zooming through the cosmos, to the eraser shavings you make while using your pencil, it's all matter. Matter is made up of systems within systems, much like many things in our world. Matter is composed of molecules, which are made of atoms, which are also made from a collection of sub-atomic particles. Understanding the different layers can be confusing at first, especially since it s a concept you are unable to actually see. But with enough practice, the structure and behavior of atoms and molecules won't seem so intimidating.

Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Discussion - Why do you believe that there are different types of things, when everything is made of practically the same elements?
