HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR SPRING 201

LEARNING CONTRACT
Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths in an organizational/interpersonal setting that aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URI s !enter for Student "eadership #evelopment$

%ctivity: &#etail your plan here' I plan on (ecoming )orth *oods !hallenge !ourse Trained so I can facilitate low ropes elements$ I want to use my strengths to help groups and organizations (ecome wor+ more inclusively, use their strengths, and find (etter ways to wor+ as a unit$

,vidence: &Include as an attachment in your we(site ta( at the completion of this pro-ect' The evidence I am using are three pictures from my training and shadowing e.perience$ /icture 0st12nd is from my shadowing e.perience where my group clim(ed the roc+ wall and participated in the low ropes element Islands$ In my 3rd photo, in order to (e fully trained, we had to create a ropes course schedule and facilitate it to current !hallenge !ourse 4acilitators$

%nnotation: &%nnotation is an outcome5 (ased descriptive of your activity, similar to 6descriptive notes7 and is written only when you have completed your activity$' 8ecoming a !hallenge !ourse 4acilitator consists of three days of training$ The first day of training consisted of our training leader, %llie, going through important things we need to +now to (e trained$ *e also got our training (inder, which contained descriptions of low ropes elements, description of challenge (y choice, a map of the course, and other helpful things I would need to learn as a facilitator$ The second day of training consisted of running through all the steps a facilitator would do when leading a group$ It was a really long day (ecause we went through every single course$ 9n the final day, we used the s+ills we honed from the day (efore and led a group of current challenge course

facilitators$ This was a fantastic learning e.perience (ecause all of the current facilitators acted li+e the worst people we would see on the course when we (ecame facilitators$ I used my strengths throughout this entire e.perience (ut three stood out to me the most, Includer, #eveloper, and %dapta(ility$ %s an Includer, I had to ma+e an encouraging environment where everyone was a(le to share his or her ideas$ It was really important to find creative ways to give everyone in the group a voice and an opportunity to spea+$ 4or e.ample, I lead trolleys, which is a event where the team needs to put their feet on a plan+ attached to rope and as a team move from the starting point and to an end point$ In this event I noticed that team mem(ers had ideas (ut no one was listening$ I decided that everyone needed to (e silenced e.cept a few people and it forced the :uieter mem(ers to have a voice$ %s a #eveloper, I see the potential in others and find ways to cultivate that potential$ I thin+ that recognizing peoples potential is e.tremely important as a facilitator (ecause I can find creative ways to ma+e those who always participate listen to others within the group and have the more reserved mem(ers participate more$ 4inally, adapta(ility was another great strength to have (ecause as a facilitator, I needed to adapt to the needs of the group$ % group may do really well at one challenge and not so well at other challenges$ I need to (e a(le to recognize the pro(lem and adapt (y finding a proper solution$ Instructor Signature: ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
